View Full Version : editing individual VOB's
some of my ripped movies are over the DVD-R limit by only 2-3MB. I was wondering if there was a way to edit individual VOB files since the last one always includes credits and the first one always has studio logos. The reason is that I'm hoping to avoid re-encoding. I've come across programs like VOBedit and VOBsplitter but can't figure out how to use them. Any advice regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

go to derrow's site and check out the link for demuxing single cells. Keep me posted on whether it worked for you. I'm just starting to use that method now...

VOB Splitter is very good if you only want to cut credits from the vob. To use it: Go to the files tab. Select the vob to open (usually the last one) and the destination file. I usually add the letter "A" to the vob so I can tell them apart. Next, go to the Split tab. There are two sliders. The top one will set your starting point. Set it to zero because you want to cut from the end. The bottom will dictate how much you are going to split to the file you selected above. I recommend viewing the last vob in PowerDVD or something so you know about what percent you need to cut. Calculate the percent of total frames (or just guess by the size of the blue bar) you need. Slide the bottom slider until you get to the number of frames. Click on "Start Process". It takes a couple minutes. Then click "Exit". Now, move your original vob to another folder for safe keeping. Move your split vob to your video_ts folder and check the size. Also, play it to make sure you didn't cut too much. That's it. Oh yeah....make sure you have re-named the VOB to the correct name. Use IFOEdit to get VTS sectors a couple times until it is clean. Then you're ready to burn.
I have posted a tutorial for a quick and dirty method of editing VOBs without re-encoding. You just need VstripGUI and some basic math skills.

Not saying this is the best method, but so far it has been working for me.
thanks for all the replys and advice,
I've tried Derrow's method and it worked great for me I didn't even notice a drop in quality (however on a smaller TV). I also used vobsplitter because 1 movie needed just the titles removed to fit. That worked too.
Several comments and observations:
1- Derrow says not to transcode between VOB ID's but doesn't go into detail. I experimented and transcoded individual VOBs with ReMPG then remuxed them with VOBedit. I played them back with powerDVD XP 4 and they stuttered a bit at those points but played. I simply transcoded VOBs till the film fit. I then used IFOedit the usual way but kept everything. The film played flawlessly with powerDVD and on my pioneer standalone. However, I must mention that the 2 VOBs I broke down with VOBedit all had 3 VOB ID's each using 2 cells so that I don't think I was actually transcoding between ID's.
My question is why can't you transcode between ID's especially since you reprocess everything with IFOedit?
Because if this method works it is faster and better in quality than transcoding the whole flick and breaking down VOB's derrow's way
2- With VOBsplitter I tried removing the studio logos and the resulting film would'nt play on powerDVD.
My question is that if you then use IFOedit to reprocess the movie would it work?
If yes, then that would in some cases be even better and faster and then you could get rid of those damn logos too.
I have'nt used the VOBsplitGUI method yet but it sounds good and thanks for the link. I will post later with results.
