If you flip too mpeg-1 then some settings will change. This is the reason dvd2svcd included SVCD-Settings.ini and VCD-Settings.ini to quickly revert back by just loading them in the Misc. tab.

For those who wish to manually change them (mostly for newbies) here's there's two mini guides or whatever you call them of suggested settings to change back.

Settings to make VCD 1.0
Settings to make SVCD 1.0

thanks for the release DVD2SVCD I love the new eject options a bunch
ripping with new build now.

What would I have to change if I wanted to make XVCD using CQ. If I simply choose TMPGEnc as encoder and CQ as method will it make a VBR xVCD (with bitrate going to max of 2530 ect)?

xVCD...I thought mpeg-1 couldn't contain VBR and only handle CBR? I have tried higher bitrates (accidentally) and powerdvd and windvd would choke and audio synch was bad and it would show a new frame every 5 seconds or so.
I really don't know though cuz I'm no expert at all with TMPGEnc.

With TMPG there is the option to use CQ VBR with Mpeg-1.
This is really a "fake" or Quasi VBR since the Mpeg-1 spec calls for CBR, but this is kinda like us doing CBR in Mpeg-2 since the spec calls for VBR and it is still really VBR, but with very small variances in bitrate.

You could also call a Mpeg-2 video stream in a VCD format a XVCD I guess. I really don't know if it's an XVCD or an XSVCD. It's kinda a hybrid.

I don't know if this option is available in DVD2VCD. I haven't even had time to install 1.09 yet.

I have been reading up over at the official MPEG website and other places and I cannot find much information on VBR at all. Mostly is just glanced over. I have sent an email out to the MPEG group in hopes of getting clarification.
All I can find is one line that makes specific reference to MPEG-2 and VBR encoding. The paragragh that contained the line was giving an overview of VBR and the different types of algorythms. In this paragraph it specifically mentions only MPEG-2, but I don't know if I can take anything from the omission of MPEG-1 since it was very brief and incomplete.

I will continue to look into this since I would like to know what the official word on VBR in MPEG-1 is.

I think BACH summed it up well

saying basically mpeg-1 CBR is required for VCD 1.0 and VCD 2.0 video stream

however, for an XVCD mutant...anything that floats your boat is fine if it plays on your standalone dvd player.

2) Once VCD was created as mpeg1 video and SVCD was created as mpeg2 video, usually we have:
- XVCD: anything that has mpeg1 video, doesn't fit VCD spec, and may be played in a standalone DVD player;
- XSVCD: anything that has mpeg2 video, doesn't fit SVCD spec, and may be played in a standalone DVD player;

I unfortunately don't have access to any real good books on the subject and I must say the stuff on the Mpeg official website is real confusing and even seems to contradict themselves from time to time. The only thing I think I can extract from what I have read so far is that there are several VBR methods(they mention 3) and one(this is all they are specific about) is only capable of being used in Mpeg-2. They called is simple VBR and said it was a better method. I had no idea there were multiple ways to do VBR.

I guess when I had read about "Quasi VBR" and not exactly real VBR the people were talking about Mpeg-2 having a better method. I guess this makes sense since it is a newer and improved standard over Mpeg-1. Getting into the nuts and bolts of this stuff I realize that it's not so simple.

I am curious that if there are several methods of doing VBR within one standard why is it I do not see the options in something like CCE to change the way it works? Is it because they choose a method that works best for they type of video they do and stick with only that one?

The more I dig the more confused and intriqued I become.

I am also so curious that if CBR and VBR are so intergral in the method why is only ever briefly mentioned? Is it that maybe it is mentioned, but called something else.

I wish I had more time this is gotten really fascinating for me.
