How to encode mpeg2 at high rez?

I've mostly used Xvid & DivX but wanted to try encoding some sample MPEG2 HDTV clips at high resolutions, say up to maybe 1920x1080p. I just wanted to see how playable they were with the hardware MPEG2 accel support built into some graphics cards.

Both TMPG and CCE appear to have limitations here. Anybody know if there any other free/cheap/trial encoders that can handle something like this?

1920x1080 works fine in TMPGEnc, you just have to use MP@HL of course.

It doesn't for me. It just hangs as soon as I load the file. What version are you using.

Hmm, that is strange. It works here, but it takes forever to encode and my computer can't decode it in real time of course.

I'm using TMPGEnc Plus 2.53.

Yeah, that was the trick. I needed to get the TMPGenc Plus trial from Pegasys instead of the basic copy from tmpgenc.net. Otherwise there is no MP@HL support.
