View Full Version : Audio Sync... bbMpeg bug?

My problem is that my Audio is out of sync for any PAL R4 DVD I convert to SVCD using DVDSVCD 1.101b1 thru 1.108b1. Let me specify my async problem. Specifically, my audio is 2-3 seconds faster than my video through each of the entire SVCD discs I create. It is consistanty off for PAL movies while NTSC are OK. I have R1 DVDs I bought in U.S. when I lived there and also have R4 DVDs that I bought in Australia (where I currently live). I have been troubleshooting the problem with test, after test, after test for the last 3 months.

Under the bbmpeg setting tab of DVD2SVCD; I have used various values of Movie Offset (Seconds) > 0 (including 0). Values I have tried are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... 10. As indicated these change the point at which the Audio comes in when the video starts. However, none these values have had the correct sync effect. Audio is always slightly faster or slower - BUT NEVER sync'd (yes.... it's noticably out of sync). And, usually when I use values less than 1 and greater than 4 then then sync problems are REALLY BAD. I have found that if I change the default from 2 -> 1 I come close to in-sync, but still not right.

NOW here is the wierd part. I've tracked the problem to bbmpeg. By confirming that the MPG file muxed by bbmpeg is out of whack. When I play the file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg (created using DVD2SVCD processing) using my PC based VCD/SVCD player like STHSVCD or HeroSoft DVD the audio is out of sync just as it would be if I played with stand-alone player. I have a XMS DVD player (Chinese) multi-zone DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/MP3 player. (of course I can't play MPG files direclty on player I have to use VCDGear to convert MPG to .BIN/.CUE file or VCDImager. Point is I verified the audio is out of sync on stand alone player with source .MPG converted to .BIN - that happens to also display audio out of sync (exactly the same) when played with STHSVCD. So... it is the .MPG file. HOWEVER - NOW - THE WIERD PART.... If I play the same file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg with Windows Media player or PowerDVD - I GET NO AUDIO SYNC PROBLEMS with the MPG????? STHVCD gives one result and PowerDVD / Windows Media Player / ZoomPlayer give another???? I don't understand?

Ok as for other settings in DVD2SVCD I have tried internal RIP routines and vStrip process. I haven't bothered trying SmartRipper because I believe that would just probably create more variables/problems.


What I have done though is to take the file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg
and re-mux it with TMPENC 2.53.35-130. I do this by using the TMPENC> MPEG TOOLS> Multiplex> dialogue. Basically, I let DVD2SVCD go through full processing then take the resulting file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg use as TMPENC audio input and video input and select output file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00-NEW-TMPENCODED.MPG this gives me a nearly perfectly Audio Sync'd MPEG file when played with STHSVCD and on stand alone player. I say nearly perfect because it is about 250-500 ms off audio video sync. So this tells me that bbmpeg has not muxed the original file correctly? IS this possible?

I only wish the author would except PAYPAL donations (the kind used with Ebay - no PAL pun intended). I would love to donate some money to the DVD2SVCD cause (I have sent e-mail to the author with this suggestion already). Paypal maybe soon?

Sorry to digress... what I am looking for is a simple process to fix this async problem so that I don't have to muck around with post processing (REMUXING) my audio and video after DVD2SVCD / bbMpeg is finished converting my PAL R4 DVDs.

If the SVCD plays correctly in PowerDVD then it is probably synced correctly. Those other players may not read the SVCD flags correctly and may start the audio early or late.

It has been stated on this board that your other Software players do have occasional issues with sync. What is a bit wierd is that Windows Media Player is actually in sync. That is notorious for being out of sync.

Have you played with the BBmpeg startup delay for the video or audio? Not the movie offset. In DVD2SVCD 1.08.1 to find it you need to put DVD2SVCD into advanced mode on the Misc tab and then click on the BBmpeg settings dropdown on the BBmpeg tab. There you can adjust the startup delay of the audio or video and not the combined video which is what you are doing if you change the movie offset. When you do this put Movie Offest back to 2.

Why your NTSC videos are in sync and not the PAL videos is a little strange. Do you use the NTSC->PAL checkbox or leave it as NTSC and have your video equipment do the conversion?

Post your DVD2SVCD_log.txt file for a movie that is out of sync. Don't attach it use cut and paste.

i also used to have sync issues, i have the OMNI SPL2000KD which is some kind of chinese brand. I had tried many many times to get it so sync, even changing the bbmeg advanced settings to 230 even 250 didnt help. This sync issue was at random i also have different region movies, some worked others didnt.

I tried to have my own logo in my movie rips. At 1st all of them had my logo when ripping but when i tested it with NO LOGO = it WORKED 100% EVERYTIME - so i had to be content with NO LOGO.

If you havent tried this already, REMOVE the start up smiley face logo or your own, if this works, then you will just have to rip and NOT include a START logo.

try this and see what happens. You have two options here
1) Upgrade the XMS player firmware if it exists, on some units you can do this - maybe you can, on mine i cant, so no LOGO for me.
2) Dont use a smiley face LOGO, you can still use the change CD logo, it works for me

I noticed this problem on a friend's DAEWOO DVD standalone also (don't know the exact type).

Conversions with the startup-logo and chapters gradually got out of sync, those without logo are played perfect...those with startup-logo and no chapters were ok (but that's lousy in case one needs to FF or REW :-)

I myself own a Pioneer DV535 and this machine played them all correctly in sync, with or without startup-logo...

Thanks to all those that have posted suggestions thus far.

I tried it again without the CD Title picture (the smiley face)... No good. Still out of sync. I really thought this was it. Because I made a special (custom) title pic image. I thought this was what had thrown me out of wack. NOPE... that's not it. Still out of sync even when I run without title pic.

However,
I have not yet tried the advanced settings in bbmpeg. I did find the place to adjust the level. I'm just not sure which values to change and what to try first. (There is a big warning in RED at the bottom of the bbmpeg dialogue - that says you can 'really mess things up'. I guess I'm looking for direction.

Also yet to try turning off the chapters.

As for which players cause me the problems. YES as mentioned when I play the MPEG file: bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg this is the file that will be converted to .bin. using:
Window Media Player - plays in-sync
PowerDVD - plays in-sync
STHSVCD - plays out-of-sync

Still out of sync with Audio to fast for video. It is pretty consistent all the way through the picture... although after a closer look I think it may be drifing ever so slightly through the picutre so that it IS worse toward the end of each CD.

NOW I DO UNDERSTAND that the HeroSoft DVD or STHSVCD player may not be perfect, BUT ... these players play out of sync exactly the way that my stand-alone player plays out of sync. IT is what I have been using as a double check of how the SVCD will actually play.

I am going to try DAEMON tools to mount SVCD images and test with PowerDVD, but unfortunately I still will only know how they play on my stand-alone player by burning to CD. I've got so many CD coasters/frisbies I'm starting to think I could have a big party.

I am posting my log file... I'm sorry I did not realise before that attachments were no good.

If anyone can help I will be VERY VERY appreciative...
