View Full Version : Partial but permanent subtitles for newbies

I would like to add some permament subtitles to only part of a film, just for a few seconds and in several different places. I looked in the subtitles section but none of the threads seemed to be quite what I was looking for. I am very new to this, so simplified answers would be nice! If you need to know which encoder I use, it's Flask.
Thanks.

Hi there!
I can think of one solution over here. Maybe there is another one, but I dunno....
First of all you will have to switch to VirtualDub since it will require you to use great VD's plugin - Subtitler.
All you will have to do is just to find out what part of the movie needs subtitles (know timecodes and/or frames) and generate a .ssa script (SubStationAlpha - for more info on that look here: http://www.eswat.demon.co.uk/ ). If you will get familiar with .ssa you will know how to generate a script and you will be able to use this script together with Subtitler in VD.
I know that maybe it doesn't sound that easy, but that's the only solution I can think of right now.
I have never tried importing any of the VD's filters into avisynth, but look at the Avisynth section and/or Subtitles section of the forum for answer on this. The rest is just encoding. Read some of the Doom9's guides (especially the one about VD)...
take care

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying it and I am having some success, but it is proving to be a bit of a arse. Does anyone have any other ideas that I can try?

Hi-
Another solution might be to create a bitmap of the text you want (or several bit maps if the text varies). Then use VDub-Nandub's Logo filter several times to place them in the movie. After the bit maps are created, it's real easy.
But creating the SSA script suggestion is also a good one. What problems are you having with it?

The problems are mainly just getting used to VirtualDub after using another program. I have been reading the guides and I think I am getting the hang of it now, but I'll give your idea a go aswell to see which I prefer. Thanks for the help.
