View Full Version : Real Media in an XCD?

Okay so to my understanding so far one's choices for file container when burning to 'XCD' are basically ogm, mp4, and mcf. Would it be possible to burn Real Media streams as well? Since these are meant for streaming I suppose they have all the error protection one would need already built in..
Real as a company may still pretty much suck but their codecs have matured a lot since G2 and 9 looks like the best bet out there for encoding anime. The only drawback to the format is the lack of support for more than one audio stream and selectable subtitles, but perhaps a petition to Real could fix this (then again... it'd be dealing with Real as a company..)
Although I suppose no directshow filter could be built to deal with realmedia, so perhaps it would be impractical to try to use it with XCD, as the data would always have to be extracted to the hd first.

Anyway, despite the drawbacks does anyone know if this would be possible? I can't imagine why it wouldn't be but its always good to be sure and maybe spark some controversy in the process ;)

I guess you can burn them, but as the format is closed we have no insights in it - thus you'll have no protection of the vital stream info.

Currently only DirectShow-enabled content. RealMedia uses its own player so it cannot be played off the CD. The same for MP4, althought we may get Wmp4player support for this sooner or later since it's an OpenSource project.

The only way of solving this is to write a new Installable File System driver, but this is too heavy for us right now. The fun part is, this could work with Linux, using a custom vcdfs driver. So perhaps the only way of watching MP4 or RM under XCD in near future could be Linux...
