I'm planning to buy a new player with progressive scan. What would you recommend as a perfect player for DVD-R? MP3 support is a must.

Pioneer DV-444, compatible with DVD-R/RW with no probs (of course it's a Pioneer), progressive scan, SVCD playback, XVCD playback, XSVCD playback, and it has MP3 support.

My recommendation too. The Pioneer DV-444 has everything you can want in a progressive player. It also (at least the last time I checked) was the highest rated player on vcdhelp.com's list.

How much can you expect to pay for the Pioneer?

It's right around the $200 mark. Heres a pricegrabber list:

Too bad I bought mine when it first came out (close to $400), but I'm still happy with it.

the DV444 is the best lpayer I've ever had (its the only one i've ever had) ;-)
Seriously though checkout the reviews on www.vcdhelp.com people live it, i love it, plays SVCD VCD MP3 DVD-R DVD-RW n.p.
HOWEVER the progressive output is a scam ( so i hear ). Read on vcdhelp.com I dont use progresssive so its not an issue but you MUST read the reviews for more info....other than that it RULES.

Progressive is a scam? I've seen both and the difference is very obvious. Somebody will need to explain that one to me...

jdobbs.....scam = not true progressive.
Apparently it shows with very POOR quality output with certain displays, sorry i cant tell you more as I dont use progressive output. The posts in VCDHelp cover it in more detail.

toshiba sd9200 is the reference player for progressive output. if you arent going to use prog out then the 444 is the way to go but the prog out on it is just a gimmick remeber... its the crappiest prog output around

I've read too many negative reviews about DV-444 regarding its progressive output, though its DVD-R compatibility is superb. The SD9200 is a little out of my range. What about the Toshiba SD4700? What are the pros and cons on that? Does it play all the DVD-Rs you throw at it?
