Hello all,

I would like to make a "best of" DVD compilation of favorite scenes from various DVD's. Ideally, I would like to do this without re-encoding the video. I would simply like to extract each scene and re-combine them into a playable DVD. Could anyone point me to a guide or tool that can accomplish this? I know that smartripper and other tools can rip individual chapters, but I don't know how to re-combine them. It would also be very useful to be able to do this using a subset of a chapter, as well.
Any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated.

load the full movies into virtual dub then rip the scenes you want and save them as separate mpegs then use a good burner (nero should do well for your purpose as it can create simple menues in svcd mode) to burn these files onto a cd. good luck. that is, of course assuming you have the movies in an mpeg format already. if not.... i'll get back to ya

falcor: well, hes talking about mpeg yes, but mpeg-2

scav:

grab tmpegenc, the the mpeg tools theres a joint and cut, cut each clip up in there (and join them together too if you want), but keep in mind that you'll only want (i think tmpeg will restrict you maybe) to cutting at the start of a GOP.

Enf...

I guess I could have been a bit more clear.
What I'm trying to do is create a new DVD-R whose chapters are composed of chapters ripped from numerous DVD's. Like, CH1=lobby scene from Matrix, CH2=attack scene from ID4, etc. I can successfully rip the individual chapters from thses DVD's into separate VOB's and there supporting files (.ifo, .bup, etc.), but I don't know what software will allow me to organize these separate VOB chapters into a burnable grouping of files WITHOUT re-encoding the video. Is this possible?
I have tried de-muxing the vob's into separate files, and then remuxing back to .mpg (mpeg2), but what does this buy me? Can I then combine and transform these .mpg files into a burnable VOB set of files without re-encoding? If so what software will do this?
Thanks for the feedback so far.

The missing part of your puzzle is a DVD authoring system.

If you have VOBs of all our scenes, I'd simply use VOBrator to demux them into their component M2V and AC3 files, create menus in Photoshop, then load up my DVD authoring system of choice (in this case, Spruce Maestro) and compile it all in there.

Maestro will then re-mux everything into a single DVD-R. Demuxing using VOBrator or Vstrip or whatever, doesn't change the integrity of the MPEG2 file, merely strips it down to its component video and audio files. Maestro will then "re-mux" them when you compile your project.

Hey, thanks for the prompt reply. I have Nero and Ulead Movie Factory and Ulead DVD Workbench and none of them seem able to re-combine the vob's or .mpg's without re-encoding them. I have tried to find Maestro but have been unsuccessful. There is a site which advertises a demo copy, but when I click on the download button, nothing happens. Could you point me to where I can find Maestro?
Thanks again for the reply.

Sorry can't help with that. My company bought a Maestro workstation a year before Spruce was bought by Apple.

uhm, i may be missing something here, but what you want to do should be fairly easy... find out which chapter has your scene in it, rip the vob that has that chapter in it, load the vob into dvd2avi, scroll through the vob, using start and end point brackets, save as avi, load avis into tmpgenc, apply svcd template (this will give you mpeg2) encode avis to mpeg2's then use ulead or vcdeasy or tscv to create you disc with thumbnailed pics of the chapters. theres no reason this shouldnt work, its not a hard thing you want to do.

@Falcor,

Well, I am trying to find a method that doesn't degrade the image by re-encoding the video. Your method uses two re-encoding passes (once to avi, then again to mpeg2). I'm trying to find a way to simply use the existing DVD quality mpeg2 file buried in the VOB and "copy" it to another DVD in full DVD MPEG2 specs (not svcd).
@Kwag
Thanks for the suggestion about IfoEdit. I've seen guides for this tool that explain how to extract parts of DVD's but no explaination of how this tool can "recombine" vobs. Doom9 has some ifo guides, do you know where there may be others?

Thanks for the feedback.

As it happens, I put together a tutorial for extracting scenes from DVDs and combining them into a new DVD - WITHOUT RE-ENCODING.

This method seems to work fine for me, and I made myself some nice compilation DVDs. One word of warning: I am new to this stuff, so I can not promise that the method I worked out is totally "correct".

If you want to give it a try you will find the tutorial at:

one final note: I managed to forget my Yahoo password, so for now don't use the Yahoo email address I posted on the site. Post questions in the site's own forum where I will be able to see them.

Marko,

Thank You!! Exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I appreciate it. This will save me hours of time.
Thanks again!

No problem. Let me know what you thought of the instructions, and if the compilation DVD you make works well. To my knowledge, I am the only one who has tested these instructions.

Also, there is a typo on Step 1 I need to fix. It should read:

"launch Smartripper, and under "Rip-Method" push the "MOVIE" button"

if you use the "Files" method, you will not be able to separate out each chapter.

good luck, and feel free to ask questions if you run into any snags.
