*.ogm...Is it good for downloading?

Would the ogg contained encodes with mp4 video and vorbis audio be good for downloading?

What I mean by good:

-broken downloads, can you play(or repair) a broken *.ogm download...because with standard broken avi's you can simply rederive the keyframes for partial downloads.

If anyone out there is willing to test it, you can try send me an *.ogm file, I'll pause it at say 1% and I'll check if I can play it.

-Corrupt downloads, can you still play fully downloaded files, but ones which may have slight corruption.

This is important for anime fansub distbn.

I'm interested to see if *.ogm is more like an *.asf or a *.avi file.
with *.asf for partial downloads it just keeps playing till the end.
but with *.avi you can't play it unless you repair it first.

I have already tested all of this. And the answer is yes! It does it with ease. Incomplete or broken downolads are not a problem. It will recover nicely and keep on trucking.

I wonder where most of them hang out...they are still using divX3 for crying out loud.

Do they work if they are incomplete? Like is there a divxfix for it?

A ogm file will play almost no matter what you do to it... if you download half a fansub in ogm you can still play it without doing anything to the file.. Try removing random bits in a .ogm and then
play it.. ogm handles file errors very well :D

Most of em hang out on IRC. Check their pages for the servers and channels. Also some of em have forums as well. Also not all of em are still using Divx3. One of my favorites "Elete Fansubs" are using Divx4 ATM and others are looking into Xvid.

As for using OGG containers give em some time. At this point even I do not use it for everything. There are some instances when AVI works fine. But OGG has definate advantages over AVI. As support matures it or MP4 would be a logical and necessary progression.

what happen with a file that contains crc erros in the middle, do they get skipped or stops the playing making imposible tyo see the good bytes after the errors ???

what happen if for some reason I dont have the beginning part, for example, I split the file in 3 parts, can I see each part or do I need the first one ???

It will play around any CRC errors. Especially those in the center or end. I have not messed with butchering a file into three parts though. Because I hate it when people do that. All I can say is get a video and try it. I probably will now just for shits 'n giggles. My guess is though without enough of the headers you probably will not be able to play it. Streaming formats are made to be played progressively. Generally they rely on the initial packets to aarive intact and in their entirety. Well within reason. The file will play even if you have a partial headder. As I understand things though there are sub headders throughout the file. But are they enough to play the file without the main headder. We shal see.
