View Full Version : why does cce speed vary?

falcor

usually, when i do a rip/encode, i have a speed of around 0.95x. today, before i left for work, i started a project of the movie slingblade, and when i got home, i saw that the cce portion was still running, but only at 0.398! i have not changed my settings, in fact, i am using a lesser number of vbr passes (3 instead of 4) (which shouldnt really effect the encode RATE anyway. just curious, thanks. falcor (i really want an avatar)

would having temporal smoothing (2:2) on cause this?

TS slows down encoding by as much as 40%.
If you read into it here you should have seen that.

As mentioned, TS will slow down encoding.

Also, if you have dvd2avi set to automatic, DVD2SVCD may have enabled IVTC, which slows down encoding too.

On my 1 GHz PIII, I typically get about 0.39 or 0.40 when encoding with both IVTC and TS. I get 0.65 to 0.70 with just TS. I get 0.90 to 1.25 with neither.

hey thanks kedirekin, thanks for taking the time to answer my reply in a civil tone unlike the friggin uptight answers i am used to getting from some mods, ok, maybe one mod. its not that i dont appreciate the help they give FREE OF CHARGE i think its a great service to the whole community, but for chrissakes, lighten up man, you team won the superbowl and beat the friggin rams. what the hell else can you want? i mean, you couldve just said, yes, ts slows processing. period. end of story. i mean you actually go out of you way to add other sh*t like you shouldve seen that or strike one or whatever. anyway, thanks mark, thanks kedirekin

Mark tries to do a hard job, of keeping the number of pointless repeat questions off the forum, he is a mod and that is part of the job.

If you read any of the rules, sticky topics, Q&A's etc that ppl have taken the time to produce you would see that everyone gets p*ssed off with the same questions coming up again and again.

If you had done a search on Temporal smoothing you would have seen plenty of posts that would have told you the same answer.

Your better off doing that anyway, if you are in a hurry, because you'll get your answer straight away.

He (Mark) prolly hasn't come back and said this himself because this has also been said endless times before.

Search the feckin forum.

EQ,
i am in no way saying that mark is out of line. i realize the unbelievable redundancy that these guys go through each day of their lives dealing with questions that have been asked and reasked. i have been advancing in this forum as well as the art of rip/encoding, and it is in no small part thanks to the likes of mark, ddogg, dvd2svcd, chainsaw and the likes. these guys are gods in thier field of expertise. all i am saying is that some mods handle the occasional repeat better than others. it takes about 0.0000009 seconds, if that, to ignore a message if need be and who knows how long to sit and take the time to cut or flame someone. thats all i'm saying. we, the GP (general public) are not as proficient as the mods or seniors and look to you/them for guidance and support-NOT-THAT-THEY-OWE-US-THAT! and its just unnecessary IMHO to flame. jusy mt 0.02
peace!

falcor in my lame defense that was a lame edit of a post.
If you read the last line and compare it against my normal writting style, the line actually makes no sense.

Originally I had a much longer post about IVTC and the effects of it, etc.., but as I have learned to do(the hard way) I made sure to re-read the post completely and caught something I missed the first time. I then did a quick edit and words got jumbled and it came off much harsher then intended. I was just doing as I am suppose to do by reminding or asking you to do a search.

You also ask why I waste my time telling you to do a search, when just answering the post and not typing is faster. The answer is actually easy. It is to remind you to do it next time and others to do it the first time. One post taking me that extra time now may save me 10 of the same reply two weeks from now. There is also so much good info people stumble across when they do a search.

As for the strike 1,2,3 stuff that was not my idea. It was started as a group by ALL the mods here and Doom9. There is a set of rules we are bound to as well and believe me they are far more complicated then the rules listed for posters.
We sorta have a good cop bad cop, middle cop thing going on and I got the bad cop part, Gerti67 got the Good cop and chainsaw135 got the middle cop.
I have lightened up. If I truly meant to flame you in this post then trust me it would be very obvious and the post would not have been answered.
I have changed my style to lighten up. Before I would have just said do a search and no answer. Now, as long as it's not complicated, I will remind all to do a search and answer the post or better yet give a link to a post that already answered the question.

If you think all I do is blast people do a search on my nick and look for yourself. I will admit I have blasted many people in the past(some deserved it and some didn't), but more often I give the best answer to a problem I know no matter how long or involved that answer might be.

I offer you this great post about TS. I know I started the thread, but this is not why it's great. All the top guys got involved in this.

@equilibrium I actually didn't come back and say any of this before because I was out at Lowe's(my first time ever at one) buying stuff and suffering serious computer withdrawal symptoms.

@falcor Now this thread I am going to ask you to read is no way intended as a slight against you or anything that could be thought of in a negative way. I just think that Doom9 did a great job responding to a user who feels a Mod is arrogant, etc... I am in no way saying you feel this about me. I just want you to try and understand that your feelings are not unique and that all of us Mods have been seen in a bad light at times. Doom9 does a good job of explaining this.

This is the post:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24070

On my part a recent series of events has shown me a good lesson and I have learned from it. This is why I am changing some of the things I do. This particular post was an accident and came off wrong. If you will hold off hanging me for awhile and see if I deserve it.

mark man, you dont owe me any explanation at all, i am honored that you chose to give me one. you guys are truly excellent at what you do and what you know and this is hands down the greatest site on the www no contest. it is because of the time dedication and knowledge of people like you that that is true. i usually do a search on issues and i did a lame search before posting my orig. post. it is my bad. as an educator of sorts myself, i can appreciate the frustration of dealing with repeated .......learning problems. in my lame defense, i had a bad day, someone side swiped my sweet ride and she's like my 5th child to me, so, i am sorry. keep on keeping on and thank you for taking the time to reply!

and BTW i think they should put Drew back in.;)

Real Quick. I felt I had to explain and respond. I hate loose ends and recent events here have shown me I was a bit harsh on people and I am making a real effort to change my style.

Now as far as Drew. I think the trade was best for everyone. What a class act he is though. He took out a full page add in all the Boston papers saying how much in awe he was at the outpouring of feelings for him when he was traded. Really a class act. I hope we beat him, but he has great numbers in all the games he plays against us. :D

i guess we're all babes at one point huh?:D :D :D

:D I thought if you made an effort you might spot that. The point is made though, you could have used that former cr*p post by me to get a link to all you wanted to know, had u done a search in the first place.

Personally I want the old Mark back, it was fear of a rebuke from him that converted me to searching first and not being lazy ;)

Ok for you I will be a bastard the rest I will be more moderate.:D

Just so as you guys know. I too was blasted by a Mod for not doing a search when I first came here. It wasn't in this forum, but the truth still holds.
I actually do find myself doing searches all the time and I actually read the Q + A from time to time. Granted most times it's to check to see if a question needs to be added, but sometimes I want to check something I don't normally do.
