I just want to make a dvd into an avi file

ok i have tried most of the guides and i just cannot get this to work. i just want to put the avi file on my disk so i dont have to keep putting in the dvd every time i wanna watch it...and i know how to play back the dvd from my HD but id rather not use my entire disk for this. the avi files are much smaller so i want to do this.

maybe im looking at that wrong guides...i mean i dont know anything about doing this and most of the guides use terminology such as "LSX Guide". i dont know what lsx is and therefore would not know what it does.
so would someone give me a link to the easiest guide to do make an avi or write up a simple one here? id appreciate any help...actually if you could make it into a .mpg file that would be just as good.

I would suggest you start with the XMpeg method:

I used to use a similar method when I first started (using flask)

ok ran into some trouble:(

as one of the parts of the guides says

" Then select File - Open Media and select the IFO file DVD Decrypter has copied to your harddisk."

i have had multiple things happen here. once it said the file was corrupted, and like the other 50 times i tried it, nothing happened.

im going to re rip the files and try it again now but i wanted to post this for a possible response first

I'd try the gordianknot+virtualdub way (http://www.doom9.org/divx5.htm) which I found more powerful and is not hard.
