View Full Version : Upgrade from Duron 800->1.2GHz influences capturing performance ?

I am planning to do the upgrade mentioned above, may I expect better capturing performance ? I use Divx 5.01 1-pass B-frame enabled capture at a resolution of 512x288 ( for PAL ) by 1600 kbps. I keep this good enough and could burn on CD after compressing the audio to mp3 format. The problem is the increasing number of dropped frames when getting to fast-action scenes.
I heard about Duron 1.2 has some new instrucion ( SSE ? ) , would this help a lot ? Or any other idea ? Assuming keeping the FSB 100 motherboard ...

kick the b-frames and you gain more performance. The only "benefit" of b-frames in real time capturing is that they are encoded at quant 4.

I fell into that trap as well, but then I realized BI-directional encoding just won't work in real time capturing. How could the encoder take information from the next frame before it was captured?

Thanks for your reply. You mean what I get is a mixture of the constans bitrate and constans quality method ? I will try both without applying B-frames. Which one do you use ?
On the other hand I think B-frame encoding should be possible if the encoder stores more than one frame in the memory. Or not ? Virtualdub also stores more frames, I set 30 in the settings and this helped avoiding dropped frames.

Does anybody have a new duron above 1 Ghz and could tell me something about the adventages compared to the old one ?

For me, it's not worth the high processor usage, because I capture at 100% quality based (640x480) and the filesize is really huge anyways.

I just tried your capture settings: 512x384 (the 288 was a typo, right?), 24bit RGB, Divx 5.0 one-pass 1600kbit, b-frames. The average proc. usage was 20%, peak maximum of 33%, no dropped frames. That was on a T-Bird 1.4@1.5, AMD761 mainboard, PC2100 RAM @300MHz CAS 2-2-2, WinTV pci, Win98SE.
I don't know how much is the advantage of the RAM, so this doesn't really help you with your decision. You could try to o'c your FSB a bit...

I tried both method without B-frames, quality based I found better than fix bitrate. Around 3.8 - 3.5 you can get an average film fits on 2 cd. The same holds for XVID where the quality is 90%-92% but I found it is a bit faster than Divx 5. The resolution is 512x288 because the source is a digital sat receiver, which can produce a 16:9 output. FSB overclocked to 112 Mhz, the max my mainboard allows,
and the result is on my Duron 896 192MB, WinMe, PCM audio plus the above video compression settings hardly any dropped frame (20/hour).
All the same but boot as a w2k and using lameacm not so good but still acceptable. So I decided to use the latter one ( win2k ).
