View Full Version : Is 320x360 a completely crazy resolution to capture in?!

_Vengeance_

Okay, I'm an experienced VHS/TV encoder (bout 150G so far), but lately
I've been trying to up my quailty a bit. I previously captured in 352x240 and left it at that.

Lately I've been playing with a bicubic resize to 512x384.
Seems to help make some of the artifacts smaller.

ANYWAY, MY QUESTION IS THIS:

I've discovered that if I reduce my horizontal resolution from 352 to 320, that I can increase my vertical resolution way up to 360.

My 320x360-resized-to-512x384 captures look just fine, but I want to make sure I am doing the right thing before going crazy with it.

1) To me, vertical lines are more important than horizontal lines.
Is this a bad assumption to make?

2) Are there any reasons that I haven't thought of that would make 360 horizontal lines bad? I know NTSC is 480 Horizontal lines and that 360 does not quite divide directly into 480 (But then again if I am resizing to 512x384, 384 doesn't divide directly into 480 either!). But is this necessarily BAD?

Virtualdub's bicubic resize seems to work pretty good. :D

I just want to make sure that I'm not screwing up!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Er, I really don't get it...

Why don't you just keep the full vertical resolion on capture and after that (if you want) downsize to what you want? Or why not capture at full NTSC?

And your "dividing" approach is certainly not correct. Just read a few guides, threads etc. and it should become clearer to you.

Not to mention the Movmasty technique (TM), for resizing :D .

But if it looks good for you, then why not keep it?

*EDIT: Oops, just saw the last line in the poll "Buy a new capture card that supports 640x480"... Are you 100% sure that your card doesn't support full NTSC. Provide more details about your card and your config, please. *

Cheers,

Mijo.

hi Ookami®, hope all is just fine for you.

_Vengeance_, one thing i dont understand, and Deinterlace?
since ntsc ISNT 480 linees, but 240+240.........

but >My 320x360-resized-to-512x384 captures look just fine
strange, usually you have only 480 0r 240 for vert cap, and free for hor.

>To me, vertical lines are more important than horizontal lines
no, are the same, but, vhs has half hor res,not sure if you get any increase in quality over 320(352-384)broadcast tv is different.
however in SVCD you keep all the vert res for another reason,
since only vertical linees are "numbered"(cause of interlaced format, similar to monitor pixels)while hor linnes are rapresented from an analocical bandwidth where you can pick the number you want,
then you can capture to 480x576,loosing just a bit ,where reducing the vert, you should go to 240(cause of interlaced),thus loosing one half.
yet i think that capturing to 640x240,if you find a player able to reproduce, this would be a nice quality too,
and no need to deinterlace.

>Are there any reasons that I haven't thought of that would make 360 horizontal lines bad..
yes, deinterlace(or im missing something?)
360/480 isnt a good 0.5,yet its a rather good 0.75
512x384 is the "second" res after 640x480,imho it is better than 576x416,
also try 480x352(with a little cropping)good for vhs.

now ill tell you how i would resize:
384x240-bicubic(0.6)->960x720(720x540 faster)-crop->960x704-bilinear->480x352-(sharp with levels if you need)-©

All, unfortunately 352x240 is the most an ATI AllInWonder Radeon can do on a Athlon 900mHz, especially with the deadly SBLive+Via combo (had to tweak my bios forever just to get that good).

I drop 1 in 500 frames but at anything higher than 320x360 (or 360x240) i drop 10% of all frames. This is with a nice 120G drive.

WinME BLOWS too, the other 2 computers are 2K but it wont install on this one for some reason. (Bad upgrade choice on my part, next time I'll stick with true intel, I could certianly use a new power supply more but no money.)

The software that comes with ATI wont even cap that good; max is 320x200 MPG (pfft!). I don't know. I don't install ATI MMC anymore.

Unfortunately the Movmasty(tm) technique would take a bit too long, I'm encoding 2+ hrs of video a night. I have 6000 shows on VHS, plus I encode everything I watch on TV (Which is alot); I have at least 5 years to go.

(150G or so created... how many more terabytes must I encode? no clue.)

I hadn't really noticed that 360 was .75 or 480... Silly me.

As for deinterlace, I use virtualdub smater deinterlace filter. (Not AreaBased deinterlace.. too strobey for me.)

BTW For VHS I just cap in 352x240. I have only really used the 320x360 for live videp captures.

And that is a good point: IF it looks fine to me, I guess it's good enough. Of cousre 352x240 used to look fine to me and now I greatly prefer to resized-to-512x384 encodes. :)

I tried resizing some vidcap-live stuff ("24" from FOX) to 640x480 but with a 352x240 OR 320x360 source it seemed kinda pointless. 512x384 was enough...

I guess it's all a moot point of personal preference. Then again most everything is. :)

ok, refresh, i did some upgrade...

>BTW For VHS I just cap in 352x240. I have only really used the 320x360 for live videp captures
-vhs and broadcast use the same vert res,and you use a greater hor res in vhs that doesnt need....
i would use 360x240 for broadcast.

>As for deinterlace, I use virtualdub smater deinterlace filter
-ahah! you didnt say this!
quality loss here, since you have odd numbers of linees.

>I tried resizing some vidcap-live stuff to 640x480
yes, 150% is the max for enlarging, 1.25-1.333 is the best.

>Unfortunately the Movmasty(tm) technique would take a bit too long
no no
360x240-bicubic->720x540-crop->720x528-bilinear->480x352....
will be AS FAST(since you dont have to deinterlace)
VERY smaller size(150gb...)and maybe better quality too.

try it,post results.

_Vengeance_:
Check your ATI drivers if you can't capture higher than 352x240.
I had AMD athlon 600mhz with SB live, VIA and radeon VIVO and
could capture 704*576 (mjpeg quality=19) with no problems.

Some ATI driver versions completely screws up capture features.
All i could do was to capture at 384x288, otherwise i lost 50% of
frames.
I had to make clean windows install to get everything to work again.
Check out www.rage3d.com forum for radeon installation/uninstallation
instructions.

Well, it took me over 6 months to get my computer tweaked out to do a good 352x240 capture.

I'm kinda scared to mess with the drivers any.

Is there a way I can *truly* preserve the driver state before any modifications, so I can come back?

Somehow I don't think Windows Restore will do the trick...

/me has zero faith.

_Vengeance_
24th April 2002, 08:51
To clarify... Until new seasons are over, I'd be scared to make any change like that for fear of missing an encode of one of my shows.

Fortunatley season finales are starting to happen [Goodbye Futurama ):].

I mean, I've already used RadeonTweak to get my Quake3 game the way I want. I looked for every solution to getting a better capture and I think I'm just going to buy a separate capture card when I get a job (gonna suck having $600 worth of video cards in one computer). Seems easier than tweaking forever.

It took me over 6 months to get a good capture working. And my 450mHz to 900mHz upgrade didn't do jack to help. Neither did getting bigger and better harddrives. (UDMA100).

I will check out the forums, but I'm pessimistic about it. My spirit was destroyed long ago in the quest to get ATI to work the way it should. I've never heard of anyone getting your results either, I'm surprised. Everyone I've ever talked to [ie on IRC] caps at 352x240 on their Radeon, or lower. [HuffYUV AVI, or MPG].

If you ahve a URL to a specific forum msg or a specific suggestion.. I mean.. Just what did you do to increase your resolution like that?

Keep in mind I have an All-In-Wonder Radeon 32M DDR....

Thanks!

This was why I gave up in the 1st place.. The forums seem to merely have 1000 people saying 1000 different ways to get what I want. But in my experience nothing has ever worked. Wah wah!

hi _Vengeance_,
Sorry for long post.
Yes, best thing to do when fiddling with ATI drivers is to pray.
Second best for me is to take backup from windows partition
for example with norton ghost and then try to uninstall/install
new radeon drivers. This way you can be sure that you can
have your old setup back

Uninstalling is VERY important. ATI uninstal won't delete .inf
files from your windows/inf -folder so you have to do that
by hand. Uninstallation also leaves entries in the registry that
should be removed. There should be good guide in rage forums
for uninstalling radeon card.

AIW and VIVO cards have the same chips for capturing so you
should be able to do same captures as i.

Oh, and i think there is something terrible wrong with some ATI
drivers and it doesn't matter how fast processor you got. Something
in the drivers always made my processor work 100% when upping
resolution.

So my humble opinion is that take backup from whole OS-partition and
then try to get radeon drivers to uninstalled properly. Take an another
backup and start trying different ATI driver sets. I'm currently using
Omega's driver set and everything is working fine.

Best would be if you could make clean OS install then backup and start to trying
different ATI drivers. I think that there are 1000 opinions about how you
should install radeon, because drivers seem to have such "personality"
that they work well in someone HW/SW combination and for somebody
else they don't work at all. That is why i always backup first then update
drivers.. Way to go ATI!

Good luck(You're gonna need it)!
Hopefully you can get your system work. At least your HW shouldn't be
bottleneck here.

BR.

> hi Ookami®, hope all is just fine for you.

Oh, it's ok... How are you?

And, Vengeance, I have too problems with the VIA bug :( . Did you try the VD sync version for capture?

_Vengeance_
24th April 2002, 19:56
I haven't heard of the VD Sync version.

Sounds interesting, though I use the virtualdub 1.47-with-a-timer (www.virtualdub.net) exclusively, hoepfully the 'sync' version would have the timer too.

(compiling my own virtualdub is the last thing I'd ever want to do, if I wanted to compile everything i'd be running unix <grin>)

Could someone maybe explain/point me to it?

As for backing up the OS partition, it is 40G. I'd rather not. :)

(It's my 2nd smallest of 6 drives, the smallest being the OS drive on the machine I'm typing on now..)

I fully admit my own stubborness is most of the problem. I think I am just going to have to buy a new computer for about $2-3K, when I get a job again (side-note: computer science degree == totally useless. advice: skip college.) I'll be very disappointed when the new computer sucks too, though.

At least I've captured 150G of video so far. I have been concentrating more on getting it done, than perfecting the process.

And yes, my cpu goes to 100% whenever I am at any higher resolution than 360x240 or 320x360.

If ATI would just release 1 set of drivers that everyone could agree on, I'd try it. But it took me literally hundreds of hours to get to the point where I could create 700+M of new AVIs each day. If I break that, my production stops and I really can't slow down.

(About 370 of my 420 8-hr tapes still need to be encoded...)

Ookami
24th April 2002, 20:42
A. Dittrich's VD MOD (that's VirtualDub sync):

http://www-user.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~dittrich/sync/

The sync version has no timer, but on my FreeList you can find an external timer...

Ooops, That's why i have nowdays a small partition with only W2000 installed.
ATI made me think again my partition system.

This happened to me also when i tried some new ATI drivers. I had to re-install my OS from the scratch to get my capture work again with higher resolutions.
Strangest thing was that someday when installing same drivers they actually worked.

Amen to that ;) It's been many nights of cursing and configuring my computer to get capture work like it should after upgrading drivers.

And yes, I agree that you shouldn't change your ATI drivers if you can't make a backup first. It's way too risky..

just the word 'ati' gives me a shiver. every person i know who has/had an ati video card have come to the same conclusion. ati drivers really suck ass. which would happen first? ati coming out with decent drivers for capture or the sun exploding. of course the sun exploding. i myself used to have an ati 8500 card. after a month of constant frustration i returned it and got an asus 8200T2 deluxe. it uses nvidia wdm drivers. i can capture fine with huffyuv at 720x480, dropping only 1 frame every 13000 frames captured, and its only using 30% cpu power.

just curious: has ANYONE ever managed to capture at, or higher than, 640x480 with an ati aiw without dropping a rediculous amount of frames?

Leuf
26th April 2002, 10:15
ati's capture drivers were fine before the switch to wdm, I've had my aiw 128 16mb for over two years and have no plans to replace it, I'm just going to move it into a dedicated capture box when I can't hold off upgrading any longer. And yes I cap 640x480 with it all the time, even back when I just had a k6-2-350 I could do 640x480 with picvideo and 480x480 huffyuv. The only driver issue I have is if I go in and out of capture mode in vdub too many times it eventually crashes. If you can get by on win98 running mmc 6 there's no problem.

Yes, I can capture 720x576 25 fps full PAL resolution to Huffyuv AVI with my AIW Radeon 32 MB DDR card without dropping frames (OK maybe 10 frames per hour or so). It works well with AVI_IO but if I try VirtualDub to capture I drop a lot of frames. I have also tried VirtualDub Sync but it also drop frames.

My only problem right now is bad sound on TV-channels with mono sound. Stereo works fine. It did not help to upgrade to the 5120 unofficial WDM-drivers (see Rage3D).

My system is a ECS K7S5A motherboard, 256 MB DDR RAM, Athlon 1 GHz overclocked to 1133 MHz (had to cut and paint bridges on the CPU, my motherboard isn't overclock fiendly) and a WD120 GB ATA100 harddrive. I'm running WindowsMe on it and I capture to the second harddrive (which don't have any system files installed). This motherboard is based on the SIS735 chipset so it don't suffer any VIA bugs, maybe thats why it works? My soundcard is a simple Soundblaster PCI 128 which is known to have good clock stability.
I think it's a good idea not to capture to the same harddrive as the system is installed on. I have the second harddrive connected to my secondary IDE-port. Of course I have enabled DMA on my HDs in the control panel.

I would always try to capture full vertical resolution and then if I want to deinterlace and/or resize I would do it afterwards in the post processing.

Anyway, VirtualdubSync version did absolutely nothing any better than any other version of Virtualdub... Oh well.

320x360 seems to be okay for resizing to 512x384.... 360 is .75 of 480 (640x480), and it's "close" to 384... I'll just have to suffer with the ATI card.

since I also play quake3, and ATI has absolutely the best TV out of any card i've seen, I'll stick with that.

This is a bit off topic, but i'll never buy an asus card again. I owned an Asus 3800 DTeluxe. I would never buy an asus card for the following reasons:
1) Burst into flames.
2) Before that, fan on card broke.
3) RMA department incompetent. Couldn't figure out the card was mine. Sat there for 3 months before I called them up. They don't know how to run an RMA department *OR* look at the return address on a package.
4) Poor video capture quality -- very dark, no s-video input.
5) Bad tv-out. Didn't come on until you are in windows. For ATI, you can see tv-out even in the BIOS screen.
6) 3-d glasses were a ripoff. Not even supported in OpenGL. I wanted 3-d quake. Not 3-d turok.
7) Didn't even come witih Turok like it said!
8) Very slow loading in quake levels -- i'd be the last one in, every time.

At least with an ATI Radeon:
1) Great TV out. Everyone else's TV out that i've seen in person, even those with S-video, has been inferior.
2) Great Quake3 game. I play 800x600 at 50-100fps all the time.

Now if only I could get good video capture, I'd be 100% happy.

With my AIW radeon, and Dual P3 800 I can cap 640x480 divx @ 6000kbps, with (almost) no frames lost in virtualdub. (maybe 10 an hour or so)
Then I run it through nandub and deionterlace it and it looks beautif and is wickwed tiny small. Capping with the vertical res @ 360 is a little weird, ive not tried it, I wonder what it will do with the interlacing. x 240 kills interlacing totally, btu 360 is very strange. Ima try it. Generally though, I cap 320x240 (BTw people, never capture AVI to 352x240 if its gonna stay divx and you arent resizing, thats improper aspect, its stretched too wide), and for stuff thats really important to me to look good ill do 640x480 divx or ms mpeg4 VKI, or huffyuv if I have the space on han.

i take it you using fast motion? try using 640x480 divx slow motion at 6000k, then lets see how many you drop. :)

if you capture that high and deinterlace it like that, you lose so much quality. its better to use tmpeg and ivtc it. with the right field order of course. i have done this many times, resulting in full frame quality and 99.9% of interlaced frames gone. (ntsc encoding)

It´s a pity that Matrox is completely out of the question for anything other than plain 2D - but in 2D, no-one can beat them! And let´s wait how big our eyes will get when they release their Perhelia (if ever)!

My wife has a matrox card (G400 DualHead) and I'm not impressed. I don't want my dialogs popping up half-on-one-monitor and half-on-the-other like both people who own Matrox cards have had happen to them.

ANYWAY...

I have since found out I can actually achieve 384 vertical lines of resolution.

Can't quite capture in 512x384.

But COULD capture in 320x384. :)

And resizing a 320x384 to 512x384 (320 = 5/8ths of 512) works beautifully. I have gotten lots of compliments on the improved quality of my captures.

I have another problem but I'm going to create a new thread.

Hmmm, nobody captures with ATI Radeon in Mpeg/Mpeg2 ?

I think that it has some hardware support. I captured until now about 20 hrs, and program didn't report any fropped frames. However, it's possible that they occured by too much noise. Usually I capture in 640x576 (PAL).

Latest versions of software are pretty good, only problem is that WDM driver not allows more than 288 for vertical resolution, what is very annoying - same in XP and Win 98SE.

I happen to think AVI blows MPG away in terms of quality per byte... and I don't even install the ATI capture software anymore for fear of disrupting my incredibly delicate driver setup.

Too bad my machine stability is going down the tube. I think I'll have to upgrade to WinXP (IF this machine lets me install it... win2k install is impossible on this machine unfortunately) then it will be like learning to do everything all over again.

288 lines is not enough ):

I love the 512x384... The jaggy diagonal lines are like 95% gone compared to 352x240...

ppera2

MPG is for capture, not for store of course. At least it must be resized after...

I think that no chance for XP install for you. If W2K wont...

And you must use at least one ATI component: WDM driver.

_Vengeance_

Yes, I do install ATI's WDM component.

I FINALLY got win2k to install on this machine. Installed same driver version as my working video capture under WinME had. Installed ATI WDM, and the VFW wrapper so I could use virtualdub.

Now when I start virtualdub, I hit capture, and the overlay freezes. It sits and does nothing, taking 100% cpu, until I hit esc. It then gives an error saying no sound was captured. The resulting AVI is unplayable.

I'm trying to cap to HuffYUV.

I wonder what went wrong. Is Win2K THAT bad for capturing?

One thing I always have to do before capturing from TV with VirtualDub or AVI-IO is that I need to start ATI MMC TV application and close it again and then I can capture with the wrapper. It seems that the TV-tuner must be initialized (perhaps because I live in PAL country).

I also had this with my WinTV, but it was a driver problem. First, I wouldn't get picture or sound in VDub without starting the TV application before.
With the next drivers it would give me a picture with no sound. Then Hauppage released an audio-initialization tool for that problem. Now they finally got their drivers right and almost any application gets picture and sound without having to start the original tv app. before :)

Anyway.. The problem is mysteriously fixed!

For the first time *ever*, I can capture in 640x480 ! ! ! ! ! !

Win2k Rules!

I had been capping in 352x240 for a year. Then many months of 320x384 resizing to 512x384 (worked GOOD. looked GOOD.) But resizing takes awhile. How that I can actually cap in 640x480 I can save time on the resize and maybe encode faster.

Because with the amount I encode (700+M a day, 3-6 shows a day), I could really use a timespeedup. That's what's holding me back.

Thanks all!

Sometimes you can capture WHILE compressing, if the compressing one is idle. I really hate doing that though. And sometimse I capture while running winamp, but the odds of failure increase form 3% to
