xp doesn't support vfw drivers. period. i think it's the same for ME and 2000.

vfw can be installed on 95/98/98SE (and i think NT and ME as well, don't know about 2000).

98SE can be installed with either wdm drivers or vfw drivers, however, from my experience, i couldn't install both (together) on the same {machine x os x tv_card}

>"which is better ? vfw or wdm driver ?"

so, you're lucky to have a choice. the best is the one that gives better results for you :)

since wdm is relatively new, not all manufacturers have good wdm drivers. and the generic one (iulab/btwincap) can be hard to install if your card is not supported 'out of the box'.

i'd say that if you use virtualdub (as most ppl use for capture), and you find a good vfw drivers, stick to it.

however, if you prefere one of the newer capture applications (like iuvcr) that handle only wdm capture, than.. well you get the idea :)

keep also in mind that by installing wdm drivers, u don't loose the vfw functionality, as m$ has this wdm wrapper (installed automatically when u install a wdm driver), that enables vfw capture apps (like vdub) to capture. however, this wdm wrapper is not perfect, but can give satisfying results.

i'm working on xp now (used to be on 98SE before that), so my only choice is the wdm drivers (btwincap, which caused me a lot of hard times, but eventually worked). i capture with vdub, and get good results. when i was working on 98SE, i used vfw drivers and was quite satisfied with them.

cheers

Thanks guys for your feedback?

I'm running Win89SE and my capture card (Pixelview PlayTV Pro) came with both vfw/wdm drivers installation. Both can be install and run on win98SE but not at the same time. When install wdm after vfw, it will overwrite vfw driver. Its no longer available in the Device Manager. Too bad :(
