at 128 mp3...does it really matter i have a song one fo each same bitrate, damned if i can say one is better
what do you guys think? I always though 128 was kinda low for full stereo and only recomended full at 160+, 192 if it's 49 khz
is that beign over safe? can 128 handle full stereo without eating into quality much? too bad?
The full stereo seems to pan slightly better, but thsi is in headphones, and might be my imagination since i know which is which
i'd iamgine the most impactful differnce would be in the rear speakers when decoding pro logic but it's kind alate to be testing it at satisfacotry volume.

depends on the encoder, LAME does a good job on joint stereo, there's almost no reason not to use it.
good info here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=759)

Oy, that thread hurt my head...it all seems so complicated, divx is simple mor or less...sbc was complicated hehe
See i bet my encodes are no wehre near optimle...but hey they sound good to me :-) if i dunno what an option means...i dont use it :-)
and idotn use the presets theither maybe i should, they seem too cookie cutter though and i'm never sure what i'm going to get

128 and lower: joint stereo always
160 anf higher: stereo or joint stereo, as you like. You would prefer here Stereo if you have a Dolby Surround source.

A dolby surround source won't be affected by the joint stereo method used by Lame.

@Gabriel_Bouvigne
I have to disagree here slightly. If you search back in the forums, you'll find some extensive conversation about this very subject. Ultimately we came to the conclusion that Joint Stereo should display better DPL FX. If you do a listening test with your DPL amp you should hear the difference.
I do have to agree with pacohaas, I can't see any reason to not use Joint Stereo if you insist on using MP3:D

I searched using "joint stereo pro logic" and found no post stating that Lame's joint stereo could be destroying pro logic.

Please have a look at Tangent's response here. If you don't know who he is, I'll just tell you to trust him at his word;)

BTW- I think you misunderstood my post. I didnt say LAME JS would destroy DPL information, in fact I said just the opposite. To clarify, I would advise using LAME's JS when dowmixing to DPL.

ok, it's a misunderstanding between us it seems:
By "A dolby surround source won't be affected by the joint stereo method used by Lame.", I wanted to tell "Lame's joint stereo won't do any harm (ie negative effect) to pro logic"

:D
Indeed.

See and here i thought that a full stereo sourse should be much better equiped to handle pro logic as it had 2 intact chanales to do comparisons on to arive at the new 4 channal output....you'd think js would lose some of that imaging.
Then again i'm not entirly here how exactly joint stereo works from a sample point of view.
is it stored in 2 chanals still? Is one chanal a main while theother is a branch recording only what is differnt?
Is it really more like 3 channles, with a main chanal that has information common to both getting most of the bitrate and then 2 "sub chanales" that have the extra information not contained in the middle one.
It seems either way though that lame is fully capable of deliverign supior quality regardless of hwo you encode it and what yoru destination is.
Yeah well until oog and ac3 can play nice together i can't use it :-)
besdies i'm not goign to switch my music over to oog, and thats where this question initiall;y sprouted from but i was curiouse about he pro logic implciations as i decode everything to that even non prologic material
