permanent subtitles don't switch off!!!!

Help me please!!!

I have problems creating subtitles... permanent or non-permanent: they never switch-off, they remain in the video until the next subtitle appears. It is nothing about the SVCD player, because I use permanent subtitles...

I have DVD2SVCD ver 1.0.8 build 1, and use TMPGEnc as Encoder.

Don't break forum rules!
9) Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention.


Why do you think they are called permanent? They are put into the video stream and cannot be shut off. If you want to be able to turn them off use SVCD or CVD subtitles. Of course your player must support these and no PC Software DVD player supports them.

For non permenant it is probably your DVD players fault that they won't reset or you might be using the wrong type.

maybe I didn't explain myself correctly...

I understand that permanent subtitles are stored in the video images!!!
mine is a different problem:
if an actor says "hello" at minute 1 of the film, and the next spoken sentence is at minute 5, I see "hello" for 5 minutes in the screen, until the minute-5-subitle comes.

this is very annoying for me...

How exactly are we suppose to help without any information?

That is a known problem with some DVDs. The problem is if the DVD subtitles is encoded without a time limit. I have no idea (yet) how ordinary DVD players determine when to close such subtitles. Maybe mpucoder knows (he's very knowlegdable guy, who know the inner workings good of dvds). I might ask him one of these days. (the problem occurs often in Anime dvds)

this has nothing to do with the dvd player: I can see this problem happen when I play the mpeg files encoded by dvd2svcd (muxed with permanent subtitles).

the movie I have problems with is Memento, the first one I extracted with subtitles.

A couple of notes.

What did you use to rip the DVD?
If you did not use Internal routines try it again ripping with the included rippers. It is well known other rippers cause problems.

The other thing is the making of the images failed.
That probably has nothing to do with this issue, but wanted to point that out.

If nothing else works then I must say that this is a case like DVD2SVCD said and at this time there is nothing that can be done.

Hi Mark,

I used SmartRipper 2.40. I searched for any options inside this program refering to subtitling, but there is nothing... so the only possibility is that this program has bugs.

I know the image build failed... this time was a problem of disk space, but it was enough to test the mixed mpegs. I have been able to build the images and burn the cds, and everything is ok (except for the annoying subtitle problem).

maybe you can recommend me another ripper...

Go to the DVD Rip Tab, select Activate DVD ripping and also select Use internal routines

anyway this is not a flexible option for me, because I sometimes want to rip a dvd but not encode it immediatly, and in this way it is mandatory to do it.

Bach you may be right, but did you ever consider the possibility that the files may not have been saved in a way that the subtitle extractor has a problem with?

This happens all the time with audio and DVD2SVCD.
