Is there any way to set up a SVCD menu so that it will 'switch on' the subtitles in a movie ??

AFAIK no, but you can do a (not very elegant) workaround...

- Make a menu MPEG stream that has somewhere a slow blinking "SUBTITLES: NONE" text
- Make fake subtitles that only have the text "ENGLISH", "SPANISH", "FRENCH", etc., in an opaque background. Make them appear/disappear sychronously (well, a little before and a little after respectively) with the word "NONE"

So, when the menu is displayed, the word "NONE" will be visible; when the user presses the "subtitle" button, very soon the corresponding word will appear covering "NONE", and so will read "SUBTITLE: ENGLISH" (or the corresponding language).
