Hi all,
I am trying to encode a large file (~10GB) using Virtual Dub and its erroring out randomly during the process with error code -100 and a ICDecompress error message. The error is never at the same frame which leads me to believe the file is ok and its just VDub having a problem. The original avi is DV file captured from a DV video camera. I am using Windows XP with NTFS partitions. Codec is DivX 5.

Has anyone else encountered this same problem? The only workaround I have right now is to manually set start/end points and encode in small chunks and then joining the resulting 20 or so files into 1 DivX AVI file. BTW Adobe Premiere is able to encode the entire file in 1 go but seems to be 50% slower than VDub usually is.

Thanks.

I'm under the impression that AVI is limited to 4GB, though that may be just a FAT32 limitation...

theres no problem using vdub with large files. the 4gb is a fat32 limitation. your problem must be somewhere else, but i really dont know what it can be :(

Maybe its a virtualdub bug.I suggest you compress it in parts as you do now.But why 20? Try 2x5GB or 3x3.3GB ,saves binding time.

Have you tried to save the AVI using VirtualDub's File/Save Segmented AVI command? It will split your AVI into 2GB chunks with extensions like .00.avi, .01.avi, .02.avi, ...

You can then simply load the first one (the .00.avi), the other segments will be loaded automatically. You can then work with them as if they were a single file. I use this method often for TV captures; never had any problems.

BTW: AFAIK there's a 4 GB limit due to the AVI structure, which has nothing to do with the limit of the FAT file system.

ok, there was also a 4gb limit ;)

stolen from Luke Video Guide: http://www.geocities.com/lukesvideo/

Many applications, especially older ones, use the Video for Windows architecture, which limits AVI files to 2 GB in size. Standard AVI files can be up to 4 GB in size if other methods of handling AVIs are used. However, those other methods are rarely used.

Solutions:

1) OpenDML 1.02: This is an extension to the AVI file format that allows AVI files to be of any size. To create and work with OpenDML AVIs, you need software that supports the OpenDML standard (such as VirtualDub).

I'm under the impression that in order to work with a DV file in Vdub, you need to have loaded a VfW compatible DV codec. I think Mainconcept has one, but it's not free.

@Mutable:
Yes, that's correct. The demo version includes a logo, but only when encoding, not decoding, AFAIK. So you can use it without problems if you want to encode using another codec like DivX.

This thread is very old but it seems related to my problems with VdubMod.

I must encode a 4 145 000 kb file with XviD and near the end of the encoding process there is an astonishing error. But I must precise that the error is only present is the second pass of XviD(maybe because no file is created is the first pass).

I was first wondering if this could be due to DGDecode.dll (sucessor of mpeg2dec3.dll) because I have just switched to this some time ago. But I had no error with previous "normal length" encoding, so I think DgDecode.dll is not guilty.
I was thinking that this could be XviD(too many frames???) but I came to the conclusion that XviD is not guilty because in fact I found no reason that it could have been him(avec the first pass worked perfectly).

I have already encode with such big filesize but if I remember well, it was always a bit below 4 Gb. The previous rip before this one was the second half of season's series.Filesize was a bit below(3 897 528). I used the same settings and I had no problems.

It a bit long, but now I come to the question:
Is there a 4 Gb limit in Vdub? I tought that Vdub(and VdubMod) used the OpenDML avi fileformat, so I always tought that there was no filesize limit.

Correlated with this one, I have another question:
Could matroska workaround this limit(is there is one)?
I found a thread about such a limit in matroska but I don't know if a solution has come. The thread:

I used VduBMod 1.4.5.1 and I'm under Win2000 with NTFS partition.
I was going to forgot but I have made caps of the error tab:I post them:
The first error message with the encoding tab which continue to run but without encoding any frame:

After clicking on "OK" in the first error box:

EDIT:It seems that you should forget my post(or my conclusion at least) because Soulhunter managed to create files larger tan 4GB.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74477
His requested filesize was 4224000 kb, so VirtualDub and Xvid seems to be innocent.I'll try to see if this could come from DGDecode.dll or maybe avisynth?
All suggestions are welcome

And after muxing the AC3, the filesize should be around 4430MB...

But I still use the MPEG2Dec3.dll !!!
