Doom9 writes in the Gordian Knot Guide: "If you want permanent subtitles press the Select VobSub Files button and select the ifo file from the 3 files that VobSub has created for you"
But VobSub doesent creates .ifo-Files. What shall I do instead?

When you run Vobsub to index and extract subtitles -- Vobsub Step 1 in the Subtitles tab of Gknot -- you select a directory where Vobsub will create 3 subtitle files. Those three files are .sub, .ifo, and .idx file types.
These can either be used with DirectVobSub to display subtitles on top of the video during playback with many players, or, you may "burn" the subtitles into the video during encoding.

To make it easier the file that you looking for to permanently burn into the avi is the largest of the three files created by VOBSUB (about 3mgs for 1 language and can be much higher if you go for more than 1). If you want make the subtitles not permanent that can be turned off and on or to change the language of the subtitle the you must have the files in the same directory of the movie and all 4 files (the movie, *.ifo, *.sub, *idx) must have the same name.

Excuse me, but VobSub 2.11 doesent create any .ifo File, only the .sub and the .idx File. Which file is the one to select in GKnot?

Aha! Using upgraded software is at-your-own-risk. GKnot 0.23 uses Vobsub 2.05.

Try selecting the .sub file; if that fails, go back to a standard GKnot configuration.

I was also a little confused about this before. First you use Vobsub and open the ifo-file to create a sub and idx file. In goardian knot when you try to open the subs you should select the ifo-file, if you select any of the others the subs won't show up.

but once they're created (the three files), you only need the .idx and .sub to have the subtitles.

In my case, I put the movie on two CDs so I obviously had to split the subtitles. Using GK and its Sub cutter tool, I created a total of four files (bladerunner1.idx, bladerunner1.sub, bladerunner2.idx, bladerunner2.sub). I noted that the cutter app didnt create new .ifo so I just dropped them. And everything's peachy and the subtitles work great anyway.

is my Blade runner backup acting all weird on me or is the .ifo useless?

cheers,

How do you use the .idx and .sub files? If you want permanent subtitles in the movie you have to use the .ifo file for it to work as far as I know.

I got the impression you didn't use permanent subtitles from your post since you mention cutting the subs which isn't necessary if you want them permanent. Are you using that DirectShow filter that comes with VobSub? In that case you may be right, I wouldn't know.

hmm, yeah you're right. I got carried away with my subtitles experience and forgot that the thread was about permanent subs...

so let me rephrase : .ifo file doesnt seem necessary for non-permanent subtitles when using the vobsub directshow plugin.
