View Full Version : attn: markrb, and to anyone who can help me with field operatons in DVD2SVCD

first off let me appologise, I suppose if you look at it the way you mentioned I would come off as a bit of a prick. you have to understand it from my perspective tho im pretty much a n00bie when it comes to ripping DVDs to SVCDs and this 25 times trying to rip the one thing is a little frustrating.
anyway lets forget all that nonsense and move on what'ya say? friends? :D
btw they say ignoracnce is bliss and I belive when I signed up I neglected to read the rules and I cant find them now, only the Q&A at the top of the page.
anyway i'll have a go at posting a correct question.
<<attemt at an appropriate post>>
right, so i've tried posting, searching, looking for answer to this subject an awful lot and now and all I am left with is the option to pick at the brains of you genuis DVD2SVCD rippers in this forum. please someone help me because im useless!
ok so i've been left with this same problem now since I got my star trek DVDs on April the 5th.
The field operation changes during playback. im more sure than ever of this now because I opened an episode of it in DVD2AVI (wrong forum I know) and did a test of the VOBs (f5) and the picture was perfect until the scene in which I knew the field operation would change, then I stopped it, changed the field operation to 'swapped' tested it again and everything apart from the mentioned scene had lines thru the image (basically the other way around)
My question to anyone who would possibly know is, Is there a way to change the field operation in a rip (while ripping and encoding) in DVD2SVCD? because it seems to miss these changes (i have to say each one is only beief 2/5 secs max).
I am stuck with this one now, anyone who has experienced this before please feel free to help me.
Oh and by the way my DVDs are all PAL disks so NTSC rules need not apply (I think)
If anyone would like to be a total star and solve this problem for me I could send them the section of the VOB (100mb ish) that I am having problems with.
Many Thanks

:D Perfect post
You have hit on one of the drawbacks of an all-in-one program as dvd2svcd is. First problem is that dvd2svcd has no A.I. secondly, dvd2svcd has no control over what is happening when it's executing extenal programs. However, you can try a few things. First of all I would try an utilize Donald Grafts Decomb.dll, it should be able to handle your particular problem. In the Avisynth fourm and on Donalds homepage you will (I hope) find the answers you need. To lead you in the right direction, before you start the conversion checkmark the "Edit AVS as part of the encode" in the frameserver tab. And in the conversion tab select Telecide (PAL). Now, you can try using the telecide as it is in the AVS, or you can modify it when you get the AVS window. As I have no experience with using Dceomb other than the ways I do in dvd2svcd I really urge you to go to the Avisynth forum or Donald Grafts homepage (his handle on this forum is neuron2)

Is this only a problem with PAL movies? because I live in the NTSC world and have never had this problem. I have had movies where bitrate viewer has told me different field order when checking each of the VOB's in the movie but I just leave in on TOP field and everything comes out fine.

First I must admit this is over my head in terms of the problem. I have no answer. I only do NTSC movies and have never had this problem myself.
The forum rules are linked at the top of every page.
I know what it's like to be a newbie and it's not always easy. The whole reason we implemented the 3 day waiting period was to give a new member time and incentive to search the forum and become used to the way it works and see how good posts are made.
The whole point of my Job and the rules are to keep the forum running as smoothly as possible. A board out of control serves nobody and nothing ever seems to get done. We mods can be jerks and this is actually on purpose. Through trial and error we have found that the best results come by being as firm and difficult as possible. The more the post breaks the rules the more of a "prick" we become. This not only shows the poster, but potential posters that will decide "I better not do this" as well. You also happned to come at a bad time. There was a quick rash of really bad rule breakers in a row.
Anyway for your own good read these following threads.
The Q + A. You apparently already have, but check it every so often it changes.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19566 This is a great post made by, at the time, a regular member that ended up becoming a Mod later.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19415 Good Foolproof way to burn an SVCD
Nothing the Mods, Admins and Authors say should be taken personally. If we "hit" you it's simply to show you an error. If we are harsh it's only because most people do not seem to respond to nice.
Good luck with all your future encoding and don't forget to have fun.

thanks guys,
i've just uploaded a scene that was one of the more 'questionable' scenes. I was wondering if you would all be so kind as to download it and see for yourself. maybe i'm way off on what the problem actually is (field operations) but why dont you see for yourselves and see what you think?

I downloaded the file and tried it in DVD2AVI and at first I could not see anything wrong with it. Then I tried it in WinDVD and your "problem" was suddenly very apparant. What an odd thing. WHat you're say is that this happens somewhere in the middle of the movie? So the first part of the movie is ok or does it change back and forth at different intervals?
Where exactly did you buy this dvd, I think I'll get a copy of that so I can test it for myself.

It doesnt happen in the middle it happens all the way through. I'd say every 3/5 minutes ...
I'm sure it's the field operation switching or something but it has me perplexed. Yes it does change back and forth, there is no specific gap between the intervals though, on all my encodes it does it exactly at the same spots but the gap between each seems to be random.
I got the DVD from MVC http://www.mvc.co.uk

Hi craigweb2k,
as dvd2svcd already mentioned the guys in the AviSynth forum can be more helpful with this and there is a really big thread in there that deals with that topic (some Buffy episodes IIRC) look in here - ok it's very long but look at some of the last pages:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=14011
This problem is also discussed in some German boards and the bottom line is: these DVDs are a real mess! They change the field order(dominance), perhaps some phase shifts, some NTSC 29.97 fps studio scenes mixed with 24 fps computer rendered images or vice versa or who knows and then all converted to 25 fps PAL - as I said - a real mess!
I guess the only chance is to use Donald Graft's decomb by using the "Telecide (PAL)" deinterlacing method or some other deinterlace options (You should try only a few chapters or a chapter you know of where the problem occurs). Do a littl testing on that.
Also in theory the "VerticalreduceBy2" deinterlace should work pretty well as it will completely throw away one field - sure you will loose this info and some image quality but the jerkiness should go away - and you should also make sure to uncheck the "Upper Field First" setting in Encoder tab with CCE as it will also shift fields when it is checked and the only way to prevent CCE from doing that is to uncheck this setting.
It is time consuming but when doing only some chapters (see Q&A on that if not already done) then it is not so hard to try the different deinterlace settings.
Hope that helps a little,
Gerti

thanks man! this is probably my best answer yet :)
Also you mentioned the donald graft stuff but how to I add that to the DVD2SVCD thing, I mean in my case what would I add? and would I delete the information already in the file?
man im so dumb :(
also decomb.dll doesnt seem to work, I (me the n00bie) tried to add code to tell DVD2SVCD to load it and when CCE opened it said something about the resolution being set to 720 x 56 and that it wasnt allowed and I didnt even set a res :-/

http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft/
The link above is Donald Graft's website. I am afraid his site is not very noob friendly and at times it is also not very not so noob, but not super advanced friendly either.
You will find decomb.dll under the "mine" section
www.videotools.net
The next link is for Dividee's avisynth page. It has a pretty complete avisynth FAQ. It again will take a little time to translate into normal non super techy speak, but the information in it is fantastic once you get the speak down.
How do you get DVD2SVCD to use that dll?
Download and place the decomb.dll where you like. I prefer the avisynth directory.
Well the dll must be loaded into the avs(avisynth) script. On the frameserver tab you will find a series of buttons that say edit the avisynth script (1 after dvd2avi, 2 as part of video encoding). If you have the time do it right before CCE(video encoding). If you do it here and screw up you can use recover and go from video encoding and still easily edit the avs file again.
You will need to add a line to this avs script. I believe (don't hold me to this as I have never used this filter) it will look like this:
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\avisynth\decomb.dll")<-add this
mpeg2source("F:\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
BicubicResize(480,360,0.00,0.60)
AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
Now I don't know if there are options or a call for this filter. I also don't know the correct placement(i.e. should is be before or after the mpeg2source). Best bet do a quick search in the avisynth forum and if you don't find it make a post asking the proper syntax for decomb.dll.
I hope I have been of help.

Hi, there!
It's a real good thread you made. I know there probs very well by my own (especially when ripping the buffy dvd).
In the newer DVD2SVCD (at least 1.07) you can, after selecting the vob-file, use the telecide-filter in the ecoder tab.
That works great for me (with cce 2.5 and 2.62).
Now I'm working/testing the sharpering filter and the different matrices to see it quality can still be improved ?
The Buffy DVD (here : german ones) are very dark - but even with the telecide filter you can get to a quality that is worth looking the movie.
mave
p.s. maybe you try this before editing the avisynth script ?

If you want to brighten the image a little have a look at Donald Graft's Tweak filter. I have come to use it all the time. It's stable and very fast. In fact I notice no slowdown at all.
My Apex player puts out an image a little dark so I compensate by adding a little contrast and brightness. You do have to manually edit the Avs file and add two lines. one loads the plugin the second has the settings, but if you have the hang of Avs file editing it's an easy filter to work with.
