Weird DIVX problem on my machine

I have always had problems playing most DIVX files on my PC. It is a WIN98 Athlon 1.2GHz. I had problems with a DIVX 3.11a file that played on other peoples machines that wouldn't play at all on my machine (just play a few seconds of audio and really fast video for 1 second then freeze). Then some have played fine, and now I have removed 3.11a and 4.x and installed 5.01. I encoded to DIVX 5.01 with MP3 audio and it plays find on the machine I encoded it on, but it is very choppy (the video is very choppy and poor quality). I have the proper codecs installed. I also had problems with an ASF file ocnverted to AVI. It would play video and no sound. However, the odd things is that all of these files I mentioned above play perfectly fine if I load them in Virtualdub and play them. Why is it that Virtualdub is different than mplayer2, mediaplayer7.1 and the Playa? Is it possible I have too many codecs installed that I don't need and this is causing the problem? I have been having this problem for months and nobody has been able to help. I don't know what else to try.

I finally found something that will play the 5.01 files (besides Virtual dub). The DivxPlayer2.0alpha. The only problem with it is that the audio is very very low. I have to crank up the speakers very high and I mostly just hear hiss. On media player, the video is still choppy, but the audio is louder. Then in virtualdub, the audio is even louder than it is in media player. What kind of problem do I have?

Probably a post-processing problem. MPlayer 2 and 7.1 use DirectShow for rendering the video for playback, VDub and The Playa use VfW. DirectShow uses post-processing, VfW does not (I think).

Many people have high cpu usage with DivX5's post-processing, try to turn it all off (move slider all the way to the left) to see if that helps. To find the post-processing right-click in mplayer2 on the movie window and go to properties.

Thanks for the reply. I tried moving it all the way to the left, then back to the right and it didn't seem to affect the framerate very much. All the way to the left it is around 12fps and to the right it is around 16 (it should be 29.97). I would be happy to use the Divx Player 2.0a if I could find out why the sound is so low and noisy. Virtualdub is just not a good way to watch a movie.

I went under mplayer2, right clicked on the movie and chose properties and then properties of the "video renderer" filter and unselected everything in the direcdraw options. I then relaunched
mplayer2 and those things were rechecked, but all of the hardware and emulation capabilites are gone. I don't know what this does and I hope it doesn't screw something else up, but it raised the displayed framerate from 14-15fps to 25fs. It is not jerky now, but the audio plays along at the regular rate. I then changed the Divx quality to min (in the mplayer2 properties->advanced) and now when it starts
playing, it is very jerky for a while (maybe 15 seconds) then it plays fairly well. I wouldn't say great, but it stays synced up....it is at 29fps in the statistics window. However, when I go to full screen, it is very slow and choppy again.

Have u tryed BSPlayer or GlobalDivX player?

No I have not tried those. But what I did find out is that when I uninstall the Huffyuv 2.1.1 codec, MPlayer works fine in regular and full screen mode and if it gets out of sync becuase of moving the time slider, it syncs back up. I re-install the Huffyuv codec and it starts getting out of sync immediately. So I assume this was the problem. I still don't understand what the sound problem is with the Divx Player and why the Playa crashes. Is their some way to make the Huffyuv codec not screw up the playback of Divx files?
