A quick question 4 the experienced dudes:

I quote from the newbie guide:

"The next important choice is the operating system: Don't accept anything less than Windows2000. Windows 9x and Windows ME are CRAP!!!

Why is that Windows 98 and Windows ME is utter crap when we're talking about DVD-ripping stuff? I wanna see some arguments 4 that statment.

Is it because u get faster encoding speeds/better quality or is it simply because u can expect fewer errors during the process.

I've done 2 full encodes using DVD2SVCD & TPMG on my Windows 98 system without any hassle. No system lockup or BSOD.

If u get some advantages using Windows 2000 or Windows XP please state them so I a reason 4 changing.

No offence is intended I'm just curios. :)

If you've got a setup that works for you... Don't touch it. BUT, I've tried a couple of times (OS'es) and I (although I don't like to admit it) found out that XP is my favourite choice nowadays... No crashes, no lock-ups, no hassle, no nothing at all..?

I'm also using Win98SE, I had never had any serious reason to switch to win2k, but I had many reasons to keep win98se (older games and stuff like that). If you know how to tweak it and how to treat it, it's not that bad.

I'm going to install win2k in the next weeks, mainly because ntfs has no filesize limit, but also because win2k has a better RAM performance and management, especially with 512MB RAM (on the other hand, win98 is also quite fast with pagefile disabled ;) )

I currently use WinMe with no problems but am considering upgrading to XP since I do quite a bit with Digital Video and need the bigger file system.

their are a few resons why people hate win 9x

Stability on most systems if you try to do to much they give up, multi taking is being forced on dos coded and it doesn’t like it. In NT based systems the operating system is much more indipendant, the apps don’t bring the os down if they crash you can just close them.
Up time after running windows 9x I always find it slows down having left computer on for 48hours whereas with 2k and now xp up time is weeks (currently 254 hours)including game playing, couple of rips loads of other things and it just keeps going
File size limit only a small nag but saves you ever writing .lst files or any of that just one big vob.

And winme just has loads of “extras” witch take up memory and space but no better than 98se
