Hi,
I tried to encode a 16:9 DVD with the 16:9 options but the result looks like 4:3 on my 32' WS TV. If the TV is set on the 4:3 aspect ratio the result is ok but when it is swiched to the 16:9 the image is compressed vertically.
I tried a search in the forum but I couldn't figure out an answer. What am I missing?

Just checking. Is your DVD player set to output the right aspect ratio in it's setup?

Geia sou Christo!
Just had my first two "back-ups" with newest DVD2SVCD and everything went fine. The movies were 1.85:1, I chose "16:9 (No borders, encode as 16:9)" and the results are perfect 1.85:1 anamorphic SVCDs that play fine (with correct aspect ratio) both in PC and HT (Pioneer 535 and Sony 28" WS). I have to manually set the TV to "Wide" mode as usual with (S)VCDs, but other than that they're flawless.
So I guess DVD2SVCD anamorphic encoding works OK for me, at least with 1,85:1 sources. Arianos reported the same trouble as you though. What aspect ratio is the movie? Maybe there is an issue with 2.01:1 and 2.35:1 movies, have yet to try one of them.

The DVD is set to 16:9 output and the movie is a 2.35:1 one. So I guess that might be the problem.
Anyway, I will try the 4:3 setting.

The aspect ratio now looks OK with the 4:3 setting, BUT where have the subtitles gone? Although I have selected permanent subtitles the final result comes without them. Any ideas?

Apparently you did a crash recovery of some sort. I tried to act "smart" in one of my encodings (crash recovered, changed from SVCD to perm subs, restarted from Video Encoding), and wondered where the perm subs had gone :). I know, I know, the Author himself has mentioned that in one thread...I had forgotten, ok? Don't shoot me!!!
On your case:You have to start a fresh encoding all over again :( and they'll appear. One way to check it:
Is the CCE produced file (e.g. Encoded_Video_CCE_Pal.mpv) with perm subs? If not, HE is right,I'm right and you have to start all over again.
On the aspect ratio problem:
What standalone DVD player do u use? I suspect it's a DVD player problem, although that thread died unanswered. And FYI, I tried both a 16:9 and a 2.35:1 material. So it's not the original aspect ratio to blame.
I'll check the "foul" encoding I did, mentioned on another thread (and by SupaCoopa)on a Scott and a Mustec DVD players tomorrow and report.
See ya!

Well, the foul encoding (which was "Behind Enemy Lines" 2.35:1, R1, encoded with the new Anamorphic settings), failed on a Scott and a Mustek too. Not only that, it was "shaking" horizontally, making it unwatchable. Strange thing is, it plays perfectly (no right and left cropping) on Power DVD 4.0.
So my guess is, it's a standalone thing. For me. definitely back to the old "4:3" encoding. :(
EDIT:
From what I read in other threads (quite by accident, due to misleading titles...) this is a common "unwanted feature"
It would be a nice feature though, if it worked :( :( :(
Cheers!
