DVD to 2 CD XviD ?!

How about the quality ? any good ?
2-pass ? CBR ? Alt.CC ?

PS. I always use SBC for 2-CD, wanna try to use XviD.

and I think XviD is a little bit blurry (lost skin detail) :(
I still can see the skin detail with SBC. :)

Man I am so pissed I deleted my test clip that I had been using for 2yrs for comparing skin quality's. I need to find another one anyways.

I use ffdshow date 4/12/2002 for both DivX 3.11 and XviD, with :
deblock (H & V) for both luminace and chroma set On.

Since all my material is purely interlace, so there is no
other way except de-interlaced it, sometimes use SmartDeinterlace,
sometimes FieldDeinterlace(decomb).

I have never NEVER been satisfied with any method for deinterlacing EXCEPT when fps is doubled so as to preserve motion ie. separate fields.
otherwise motion always appears jerky. (IMHO)
Gamers are rarely satisfied with 25fps in quake etc. why should we be?

Because computer animation always runs with an un-natural smoothness. Just check any cut scene in a CG game and compare it to movies, they seem exagerated to the more human/natural ones.

Also discerning over 25 fps for the human eye in a highly detailed environment such as a movie is close to impossible.

ok I'm a freakin newbie I admit. I used 'vidomi' (shhh don't tell anyone) and nic's 4-18-02 binaries to do face off which is 2hrs and 13mins. I ripped this movie in 3cds which looks great cce 4pass vbr took 12hrs. If the movie was 13 mins shorter I would have done it on 2CDs.

At first did YV12 2 pass - 1st pass vbr xvid, no alt curve, Quantizatoin type H.263 and got close to 27fps (xp 1700+) and it only took 6 hrs to do. Result was pretty block and I figure since it was only 698MB to fit on 1 cd was too low of a bitrate.

Next tried RGB32 with HQ Bicubic and 2 pass - 1st pass vbr xvid and enable used default alt curve, Quantization type MPEG. Got only 17fps and it took 8 hrs to complete. Still it was a tad better but not that much. Way too many blocks.

I guess for a 2 hr movie you need 2cds for xvid? I can put 60mins on a SVCD with 1600 average bitrate for SVCD and quality is superb. I was under the impression with divx, xvid you can encode dvd quality with half the cds as with SVCDs. That's one of the selling points.

For svcds I do 1-61mins 1CD, 61-121mins 2CDs, 121-181mins 3CDs, 181-241mins 4CDs. What is the general rule you guys use for xvid encodes?

Most people won't agree with this, but as far as I'm concerned nothing goes on more than one cd. Just lowering the resolution and using smoothing filters can do wonders for quality. Also, using ffdshow you can add noise to give back some of the original graininess of the movie.

Well i always check how the movie compress and dont care about how long the movie is.Sometimes a 2hour movie can fit 1cd but not a 1h.40min movie and if it is a good actionmovie i want the AC3,thats how i do.

ok just did it again using the HQ settings but choose 2 CDs instead of 1 CD and quality of xvid encode is great, just like I suspected it would be. So I saved myself 1 CD.
