Should I deinterlace?

I have a PAL dvd, I used interlaced bilinear resizing and encoded it to svcd with cce using zigzag scanning order, the source used zigzag not alternate scan wich should be better for interlaced(why?). I guess this was the reason the svcd looked very unsharp.

I tried again without the zigzag. Not better!

My question, should I deinterlace or what?

The problem is, when you encode to interlaced, you need more bitrate, as I have learned recently.

So, you hav some options:

1) encode as interlaced. will have too-low-bitrate artifacts... can be improbed with higher bitrate, but perhaps that is not possible

2) do some smoothing and encode as interlace. There will be a little blurring but less artifacts

3) deinterlace and encode as progressive. It will be a little blurry (that can't be helped when deinterlacing) and there will be some deinterlacing artifacts (very few with a good processing and source, but can be annoying)

so there is no perfect solution... you should look for a small clip in your source to do some tests and encode with the 3 options, and then choose your "less bad" option.

If you can encode with a high bitrate, I think that is the better solution. if not, then option 3) is slow but easy. Option 2) can get sometimes a very good compromise but has to be manually tuned and it is possible to have poorer results than 3) if not correctly choosed the parameters. Also, with certain combinations of source and bitrate, perhaps solution 3) is *allways" worse than 2).

I'm thinking that in this case where the source was interlaced but with zigzag scan instead of the better alternate scan, I'd go for deinterlacing since the "original" film maybe not was interlaced but with zigzag.
So when they resized the dvd to interlaced they "forgot" to use alternate scan.

I don't know what I'm talking about but I hope someone do! lol

*supposedly*, zig zag is good for progressive frames (that is, non interlaced); for interlaced is better to deactivate "zig zag" in CCE.

By default, CCE has unchecked both "progressive" and "zig zag"
