Wow! You guys are terrific! Thhanks a lot for keeping this topic alive, and you've shed some brilliant light on the subject. Thing is though, I use Gknot, which automates and makes a lot of things easier, but then i guess i could plug in the filters just before encodig in that little edit thing, right? Or should I use the vfc that very kind man offered me and use that in nandub?

But now that this chapter is almost ending, a new one has been started, as I am begining to wonder whether nandub and the whole divx thing is better than SVCD or not. I know (i think) that DivXs compress more and are advantageous when u wanna watch them on PCs, which is what I like, but other than being able to play them on standalone DVD units, are there really any more benefits to SVCD?

from my XP on that:

1. if you watch stuff on TV only, use SVCD.
2. if you watch stuff on PC monitor, use SVCD for 3:4 aspect ratio content and divx for 16:9.
3. if you distro encodes through internet, use divx.
4. both svcds and divx are pain to encode.


on topic n.2: svcd has max horisontal resolution of 480. with 2CD divx you can go up to 672 or even higher. the difference in quality is noticeable. with 4:3 AR you usually encode at 512-608x and these are way harder to distinguish from SVCD as bpp value is quite a bit lower in general.

that's well useful, buuuuut, I've heard some people critisize you for your taste in svcds, but would everyone agree with outpinged in that for my purposes, svcds are better than divxs?

My last and only ncounter with svcd when i tried to enconde an anime left me with a movie which was ok in quality but flashing and with terrible audio. I dunno, did I do it right? Would anyone be able to show me a 20 second or so sample of what a good svcd encode looks like? (anime or not)

IMHO, DivX looks great on both TV or Monitor, and I think that SVCD's are much more of a pain to encode than a Divx movie...
