View Full Version : Do I have to create a menu when ripping/using 2 audios?

Hi folks!

I've searched up n down the forum for quite some time now, but all I got in the end was an overflow of information in my brain. And as interesting as some of the aspects of DVD-ripping/encoding I stumbled across were, I couldn't find a clear cut answer for a newbie like me regarding the following problem.

So there you go:

Since I always prefer to rip 2 audio streams when making a SVCD (mostly Spanish and English), I was amazed to see that (unlike simple programms like DVDx or MovieJack) DVD2SVCD allows you to include a second language as well as selectable subtitles (aight, the latter merely on standalone, so it currently isn't of importance for me, since I only use DVD's on my PC, SO FAR!). Now my question BEFORE I start the encoding process,

do I have to create a menu all by myself when using a second language and selectable subtitles or does some part of DVD2SVCD do this for me? I don't need no fancy colors, animations or anything of that type, simply a cheap menu to chose from. Could any of you let me in on this?

On another note (and I know, different from the title, but it's a very simple question so I guess anybody in here should be able to help me here...): Is single pass VBR really that much worse than multi (2 or 4?)-pass VBR encoding? I'm nnot the biggest image quailty fanatic out there, and my Celery@1133 is not really that fast either so I tend to head for the 1-pass thingy (just like in DVDx).

Hopefully, some of you can give this new-b some advice,

best regards, thanks for the programm as well as the forum,

Pickaxxe

I have no idea what you mean by menu.
To select the different audio track you use your remote on the DVD player and select the other track on the player. There is no menu.
On my player if I click the audio button the first track shows up in the upper right hand corner and if I click it again it changes to the second one and so on. The DVD player has everything required built in. That is if it can support multiple audio tracks on SVCD's.

Same thing goes for the subs. Use the "subtitle" button on your remote ... if your player supports SVCD subs.

Hopefully I can offer a bit of more in-depth insight ;)

The multiple audio and subtitle streams in an SVCD and DVD arent controlled specifically by the audio and subtitle menu that you may be used to seeing, it simply provides a more interactive curve to the DVD's structure. The audio and subs are all in the same video stream, the menu can just be used to select specific ones ahead of time. In other words this is not necessary at all but simply a nice aesthetic addition.

If I get too technical for you, stick with mark and smilley's responses ^^'

With SVCD's, it is impossible (or at least very little known...) to program a selection to specify a specific audio or sub stream ahead of time, therefore a menu for which to do so is impossible (unfortunately for me, since copying this menu from a DVD is essentially pointless x.x)

So in short, no, you don't need a menu. Partly because you can access the streams directly, and partly because its impossible :)

Thanks!

It's not like I already understood all of the issue, but hey, I'm working at it! ;)
Seriously, I guess I got te main points and will now go look what my Software DVD player can (and can not) do.

Greetz and thanks,

I do not believe any software player can handle multiple SVCD audio tracks. I know that they do not do SVCD subtittles.

The Hero-Player 5.5 (www.herosoft.com) can't show right times, sometimes have a/v-sync problems. But it's small, runs from a network drive without installation and can switch Audio tracks in SVCD.
There is also a newer version available, but it needs to be installed localy on all computers, so i didn't test it yet.

eh.. actually PowerDVD 4 supports multiple audio tracks and is the first player I know of that supports VCD and SVCD hotspots (clickable selections.. kinda like DVDs, dont work on standalones)

You see if you look at the way I worded it I was unsure about the SVCD multiple audio track as I said I do not believe, but I was sure about SVCD subs and sounded more sure when I said I know.

Just so as I don't look like a complete moron.

eh.. nooo that post was moreso directed towards bach than you mark. I may have some knowledge but I'm still fairly new to posting it and you mods are still god-like as far as I'm concerned. Sorry in a big way if I worded my post so that it seemed like that :(

Don't worry about it. I post wrong answers from time to time(just take a look at the avisynth dll post, oops didn't know that either. I admit it. I really learned most of what I know from these forums and a little from my own experience. Sometimes, like most people, I jump to conclusions. In this case since I have never been able to switch audio from the VOB files on my HD(always grayed out) I thought you couldn't on the SVCD either.

Keep on keeping on the good posts.
