i.e. how to determine the maximum AVI filesize, if bitrate was 6000 kbps and DRF was 2.

I followed Doom9's Guide to DivX5 ripping and was watching the final predicted filesize in the VDub status window - it said something like 3.7 GB(!) but the actual filesize ended up about 620 MB, very close to what it should have been.

thanx

Use Gordian Knot.

I should clarify:
Run Gordian Knot
Go to Resolution tab
select frame size
Go to Bitrate tab
Select "Calculate AVI File Size"
Enter # of frames, framerate, and your intended bitrate
Read video size in KB or MB
This only gives the size allocated to video, from the number and size of CDs set.

The figure I want is the one which displays in the Nandub Files tab, in the Video Size (KB) field, after the full stats file has been loaded. Unfortunately GKnot can't read the LOG file which DivX Pro creates in lieu of a stats file.
