View Full Version : 40 hours for encoding Process?! Help needed, please....

:confused: Could it be that the encoding Process from DVD to SVCD needs 40 hours to finish it. I think the DVD2SVCD is a good programm and do it better as in my case.

The P4 1.6 Ghz Compaq, 512 Mb RAM, Geforce 2MX, 10 Gig´s free diskspace also should take it faster I think.

I am under time pressure to finish them. I have no idea to force up the speed (0.2-0.3!) What can I do?

Now I hope that the profis could give me some hints about my setting as follows:

Please help me! My problem is that the encoder is so slow. Is ist normat that it takes
about 40 hours? Give me some tips to shorten the time by holding the quality.

First problem is you are using an old version. Upgrade to 1.08 build 1 and retry. Start completely over since many of the programs changed and are better.

A suggestion: Up your audio bitrate. 128 sucks. I use at least 192.

If you are using CCE 2.5 do you have safe mode checked? You do not need it for this version. It is really only needed for 2.62 or 2.64.

The way the HD's are accessed. There are two modes DMA and PIO.
Go to www.tweakxp.com or www.tweaktown.com for more info, how to find out what you are using and how to change it.

Suggestion: I have a AMD 1.2 mhz, 512 ram, 40 gb WD 7200 rpm hard drive lots of hard drive space free....I have the vob files on my boot disk with 24 gb free on it for DVD2SVCD to use.
I can convert a 2 hour movie in 12 hours.
My speed on encoding on mpv file is roughly 1.02...SWEET speed.
I have friends with similar configs but slower hard drives and not as much free space on theirs and they only get .4 maximum.
Also I am using WIN2K OS.
They use WIN XP..not going there..LOL

What other tweaks can I do to increase my speed even more?
Is it worth it to up my cpu to a AMD 1.9?
More RAM?

Which will increase my speed the most?

My goal is to do a 2 hour movie in 6 hours, realistic?

More RAM is important, if you have less than 512MB you should update, over 512MB it makes only little effect.
About your 6-hour-encoding:
This is impossible to answer, until you post what settings you are using. CBR/1pVBR/MultiVBR? NTSC/Pal? 4:3/1:1,85/1:2,35? TS? Deninterlace? AntiNoise? Bicubic/Binliner/Simple? etc... etc...

Labersack I have to disagree a little on the ram bit. I have done encodes on my machine with both 512mb and 256mb of ram. I have seen little to no difference in speed. However when I have 256mb it is much more difficult to use the computer while encoding. When I have 512mb and set DVD2SVCD to Idle I have no problems at all using the computer while encoding.

So while I agree that more is better, if it's dedicated I can't see spending the extra money.

Yeah i have to agree with markrb, the fact is i have a dedicated machine and right now i have 256mb of ram in it. Before that tho i had 512mb of ram in it, the fact is i did not notice any speed improvement like markrb stated earlyer i only noticed a difference if i multitasked while cce was running, which of course then 512 was a bit better, but not enough for the cost of a 256mb chip.

So everybody agree that 256MB is 'necessesary', and more would help to use the PC with other PRGs at the same time.
I got a very BIG improvement while from 128MB to 256MB, little improvement with 384MB, but because RAM was cheap a year ago I bought 512MB to be on the safe side.
Bottom line: Get yourself at least 256MB. It's enough for CCE, more is a little better, not much for CCE but for 'multitasking'.

this is my first post, and if anybody will lough at me, for the reason of realy horrible english, i invite him to speak german with me :D (is it allowed?). If read an other thread in french. now i know its not allowed.

if you want to improve your speed, try encoding with vbr 2 pass.
the quality is pretty good, an jou will get 40% less time.
everything above vbr 3 pass will give (near by) nothing.
