View Full Version : Spruce Up Problem

Just done my first Svcd to Dvd conversion using Doom9's guide and it worked perfectly...3 films on 1 dvd with a menu and it plays fine on my standalone (scan 2000) with Datasafe media.
My problem is that SpruceUp will not let me put in chapters...as soon as I move the slider bar the programme just disappears..no error message, no lock up..it just goes...the same with Maestro..which I believe was made by the same people.
Am using a Athlon 1.4 with 512meg of ram and XP profssional so I think the pc is fine for what I am trying to do but I just cant fathom it out.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks.

I assume you used the method that doesn't require reencoding. This method "tricks" your encoder into thinking your stream is DVD compliant so it will accept it. That makes it possible to import it and burn, and a lot of standalone players will play it correctly. But when SpruceUp sets the chapters it tries to play it back so you can see where you're putting the chapters. My guess is that it then runs into the "trickery" and fails.
Getting the SVCD into DVD-R without reencoding is really cool, it saves time and keeps the original SVCD quality.
My personal belief, though, is that rather than make yourself a possible future coaster (do you really think you're going to keep that same DVD player forever?) it is better to reencode to 720x480 (the loss in quality is tiny with CCE and the compression ratio still stays high because your "true" underlying resolution never got higher than 480x480) and you make a DVD-R that is truly compliant with the standards. 480x480 isnt.
Here's a quote from Doom9's guide:
But if you're into making a DVDrip from scratch I strongly suggest that you create a true DVD. Using CCE you can achieve much better results at average bitrates that are comparable to SVCD but there will be no compatibility issues - not all players can handle SVCD content on DVD-Rs properly - and the higher maximum bitrate roof will leave you with an ample amount of bits to make even though scenes look good.
Doom9's a pretty sharp dude who keeps us well advised on the path to the video straight and narrow.
Robshot's method on a resized source works great for this.

I had come here to post the self same thing..if a little less complete than your answer :-)
I tried it with a couple of Svcds that I had encoded with the new Dvd2Svcd using the full Dvd method and they worked fine...but mpegs made with an older version using svcd standard size will not work.
Thanks very much for your comment though :-)

now if someone would just figure out why I can't set the audio bitrate in BeSweet, I don't have any way to get into the SSRC options area to do it, Sockpuppet-uk, did you have any trouble setting the audio to 48000?

No problem at all...you are using the BeSweet GUI are you?
The SSRC tab is on the right..2 up from the Besweet tab.

Hi,
Could you advise what program / method you are using to resize 480x480 up to 720x480 using CCE ?
Thanks

Ok, I just did my first SVCD to DVD, I had to rejoin two MPEG files for this one, followed the guide, I authored in Spruceup, and the audio goes out of sync bad. Anyone else get this?
