View Full Version : Using the Xvid decoder to decode DivX fourCC avis by default?

Why not? Personally I like the Xvid decoding postprocessing options more, and would prefer to use them on DivX stuff without changing the fourCC to Xvid.
Maybe there's some way to make it do like, much like DivX 4 can take over 3 stuff and 5 took over 4/3 stuff when it first came out as well.
It would be nice as an option in the installer, this way one wouldn't have to have the DivX decoder installed for DivX playback. My apologies if this has already been discussed, I never noticed it.

don't know if that's possible, but u might want to try ffdshow (http://cutka.szm.sk/xvid/xvid.html): it's based on the Xvid DSfilter an decode "XviD and all DIVX versions"

Hi there!
Thanks Selur for that great link. My system is not quite up to playing large framed/high bitrate xvid's using the xvid dsfilter, so i just tried this one with custom postprocessing and switching off the options and i now get smooth playback without all the messing with AviC and DIVX dsfilters.
can't wait to get new system built when i'll be able to tick all those boxes!

Selur thanks for the link, surprised I missed this filter. Plus the source is available. It uses a VirtualDub filter that tells me that others might could be added like a smoother or 2d cleaner.

Hi,
ffdshow is a new project and was not very wide-spread (until it was mentioned in doom9.org news).
I think adding support for playing DIVX 4 encoded movies to XviD directshow decoder filter would be easy. Ask XviD developers to do this.
And about using VirtualDub filters. It would be possible to use them, but it would be slow, because all internal processing in ffdshow is done in some form of YUV colorspace and VirtualDub filters work in RGB colorspace. It would be posssible to convert video to RGB, pass it through some VirtualDub filters and propably convert it back to YUV. If someone wants to do this, I'm not against it. I think it would be much easier to use AviSynth filters. xsharpen was modified to use only Y plane of image and was converted to MMX assembly.

I actually like your decoder much better right now. I'm under the impression that the Xvid people are also working on their decoder, so it's obvious that is more of a priority to them than adding various fourCC support. I am glad for being informed about your decoder in the meantime, thanks for the good work :)
