View Full Version : Optimizing xvid for anime

I dont know anything about coding video compressors, so I may just be rambling nonsense here, but I've had some thoughts.
As far as I know, compression formats such as mpeg and mpeg-4 are optimized for natural images, i.e. real-life video. Now anime contains large areas of uniform color. It just seems to me that there should be something you could do with this fact to make it compress far better than live action does.
Are codecs such as Xvid already optimized to handle the type of video that is in anime? Are there any plans to add such features, and/or could plans be made? ^^
For instance I was thinking perhaps you could develope some sort of algorithm tailored towards anime, in which it wouldn't produce ringing effects near lines. Or perhaps the playback filter could even be made to do something like this?

Heh... I've been wondering about this exact thing for a long time.
What would be awesome is a
[ ] Anime source
checkbox which would adjust everything for ya. hehe :)

2 forum rules violations in 1 thread?
Use the search button, we had a thread about this issue some weeks ago. Any further reading should be done there.

Which thread are you thinking of, Koepi?
...I really had some interest in a new thread regarding Anime @ XviD, because I see some strange behavior in certain scenes that probably are noticable only on anime content and don't know if they are discussed or reported clearly already.

I've searched also and couldn't find any thread that addressed this particular issue. I think that there is less block noise and fewer motion artifacts when compared to DivX 3.11, but the mosquito noise (aka ringing effects) around lines and subs can be quite bad sometimes. Doom9 touched on the problem in his most recent codec comparison when discussing one of the SPR pics. So I think it's a known issue, but it's just more obvious when viewing anime. I don't think we should have to rely on the Post Processor to get rid of it, and perhaps further improvements will be made to the codec itself.
This isn't really meant as a criticism of the codec and its developers. I believe it already to be the best for encoding anime. But I (we) would like it to be even better.

Please read that over again.
No need for this thread.

Hi-
You were right and I was wrong Koepi. I don't know why my search didn't turn up those first two threads. I even contributed to one of them.
But with the many improvements and revisions to the codec over the last month or so, I can see a need for revisiting the issue.
Anyway-thanks.
