Help with 1 passVBR settings please

In Oct 2001 DDogg provide the following 1 pass VBR settings:

" ........Since build 4, which for one pass modes now adds the calculated bitrate into the max value instead of the max avg, thus giving good filesize predictability, I've now converted completely to 1passvbr with these settings: Q=4, ImgQualityPriority=2, noise filter=off, LQ=checked, zigzag=checked and and very important, ALWAYS w/temporalsmoother(2,1)

The Bitrate tab is always set at: MAX=2400,MIN=300,min.avg.=unchecked,Max.Avg=2550 and the disk size is set at 800 exactly.

I routinely allocate 55-65 mins to one cd and get the proper number of disks specified in the time lines (nicely filled).

The quality seems the same as multipass to my somewhat older eyes and yet video processing time is only 2.5 to 4.5 hours on most encodes. This allows me to run it at midnight when I go to bed and normally have a finished job by 7am. That is real important to me as my main machine needs to be clear during the day. For those of you in a similar circumstance, this may work well for you also."


I have successfully used these settings with all versions up to version 1.08 B1. 1.08 B1 however, seriously baulks at these settings and provides bbMPEG files of varying sizes (396Mb, 795Mb, 1.02Gb etc).

Anyone kind enough to help us out with suggested tweaks to DDogg's original settings, so as to work with the latest version of DVD2SVCD?

I use the 1 pass vbr for almost all 16:9 movies and 3 pass vbr for most 4:3 movies. I have done well over 100 movies(1st 50 or so trying different settings) with great results. I own a 53 inch Hitachi HD tv and use it to gauge the resulting encodes. I figure if a movie looks good on it; it should look good on most any tv. While I don't try for exact DVD movie quality I tend to go for a balance of very good quality and small size.(My definition of good quality is a movie that looks better than VHS but not quite as good as DVD; but still fits on 2 cd's unless its over 2 hours and 20 minutes.)

I am using an athlon 1.2 gig system with 512 pc133 ram to encode with.
I use 80 CDR's to burn all my movies.

1 Passvbr: Avg length of encode time from start of rip for 2 hour movie - 7 hours.

DVD Ripping - Activated

DVD2AVI - Automatic

Audio - Bitrate 128, No DownSample, 2 Pass Azid gain checked

3 Passvbr: Avg length of encode time from start of rip for 2 hour movie - 16.5 hours.

The Only Settings I change are Under the Encoder Tab. I change the Image Quality Priority to 16 and Unselect Temporal Smoothing.

While not the fastest endcoding settings around, these work well for me with very few problems. BTW I am using WinXP Pro and I turn off all but a few services during the overnight encoding process. Once in a while(I think it depends on the movie) the 1 pass vbr has a problem syncing the sound to the video(you end up with the sound1 second off of the actors mouths moving) then I end up changing to 3 pass and re-encoding and it always seems to fix it.
