Some older anime has the tendency to display massive rainbowing on the drawn lines. Is there any filter or filter combination to combat this? I've tried a few, but with limited to no success yet.

I believe there is a filter for here: http://www.fiction.org/www/smoothiq/ I have tried it and it works very well with the one problem of being so slow I can't use it, even on anime I really want at the best quality possible. I get a framerate of ~0-2fps in virtual dub when using this filter on my XP-1600 overclocked to 10x150=1.5Ghz Maybe other chroma noise filters would be useful but I haven't tried them (though I think I should).

You could try the SpatialSoften filter (or better, the SpatialSoftenMMX version) with a high chroma treshold.
If these rainbows "moves" from frame to frame, you could also try TemporalSoften (or better, my MMX version, search for it in this forum), but SpatialSoften is probably better.
