State of B-frames ?

Well, I was gone for some times and could'nt check the forum. Just wanted to know what is the situation about B-frames right now (w/o 1st of April joke). Is there any working implementation already ? I read at Vdub homepage Avery Lee saying he had already started making Vdub B-frames compliant. So are we really near a public release of a B-frame enabled XviD, and, if no, is there lots of work left ?

yae, but that doesnt mean anything....it just says, that VirtualDub can correctly read the AVI Files created by DivX 5.01 Pro with B-Frames enabled...

I second foo on that one. Sure you asked
very politely which is all good, but that's
not an excuse for being so impatient. They
aren't in this game to be pestered by
deadlines and stuff like that you know, give
them some space.

Sorry, just getting tired about people asking
when b-frames in xvid will be finished. Especially
since the answer is very simple: it's done when
it's done.

Btw, try putting yourself in their shoes.. how
much fun do you think it would be if lots of
people were constantly nagging about b-frames,
like they are awaiting a miracle or something?

think the project would be worth to you as
a contributor if it was not even fun?

but hell, I only encode for fun, and even I

i dunno, i think this is sort of like waiting for christmas, only you don't know when christmas is going to be. so i know no one wants to pester the developers as to when the stuff will be ready, but one can't help but be a little antsy and perhaps just inquire as to the status of it (like whether or not there are problems and lots of work left, or perhaps it's all done but just awaiting some final testing and other stuff to make it 100% compliant with things like vdub and future compatibility issues). it sounded like r3g was mostly just confused about the news about vdub being b-frame compliant and its implications on xvid, not intending to pester the developers for a daily status update of b-frame implementation.

Do you need to calculate how much each and every day of not
having b-frames cost you or something? I hope not. The
developers have already told us to be patient. Is that so
hard to do? Or are you dependant on knowing an approximate
date for the sake of some bizarre planning ahead?
Maybe video encoding is your religion, and b-frames
are the coming of the messiah?

If not, are we not just putting unnecessary pressure on
the developers for the sake of satisfying our curiosity?
Is that not a little too simple? There is nothing more
to be gained here, they told us to be patient, and they
will tell us when they are ready to tell us be it now
or much later.

Because regardless, it WON'T be here before it's here.

And no, I'm not very irritated or anything even though
I may sound so :D.. I just don't like the lack of patience
people are displaying, and in case the developers want someone
to speak up for them here, I might just be doing that too.
Just my personal opinion of course. I am satisfied by
knowing that it will arrive when it will arrive. I wish
more would be - there are no better ways to wait. :)

I actually met up with suxen_drol last night (I should mention that I was spectacularly drunk at the time, and quite proud of the fact), and it was great to finally meet someone who's done so much work that others have benefited from. He hasn't had a lot of free time lately, so of course he's not using all the scant time he does have to furiously code on XviD.

There are a lot of "behind the scenes" things going on with B-frames (i.e. getting the VDub support in, trying to establish a common spec with the DXN folk, getting the implementation actually working, etc.) so I'm honestly not sure when they'll arrive.

I think it'd be nice if it ushered a move to the MP4 file format actually, it's so much better suited for all this stuff.

Ok, thanks -h for your answer. I'm sorry if I hurted anyone, there was really no impatience at all in my question. It's just that before I left for weeks for a foreign country, people were saying that this feature was really near from release, so I just wanted to know if there was something new on this side. You're right, of course, it will be ready when it will be, and people in the XviD crew are doing a fantastic job, and I would still say that even if B-frame support would never exist.

I was gone for a loooooooooooooooooooooong time too. I didn't even know 5.01 was released.

I was stuck in Hikaru no Go...the addiction...now I'm just impatiently waiting for the next hit.

if you look on cvs, suxen_drol did upload a number of files with b-frame support code commented out. There's few things marked with a "todo" in the code. If anyone is really impatient and is as good at this as suxen_drol, you could try filling in what's missing, but you would probably be spinning your wheels.
