EDIT : I've updated the required info for the )DVD recordable compatiblity list with the ADVDInfo lead in.. if you posted your results earlier on please add that info (you can edit your own posts so you don't have to repost the info again. Thanks for your help.
I have also removed off-topic posts from the abovementioned thread.
This thread shall be used to report about your experiences with DVD recordable media. Please indicate your experience following this template. Replace values given in [] brackets. This is a template, not a real report!
Brand: [Verbatim]
Type: [DVD-R for data storage]
Format: [DVD-R]
Max write speed: [2x]
Unit price: [$3.99]
Retailer: [www.yourstore.com]
ADVDInfo Lead In (0E): TDKG01
DVD Burner: [Pioneer A03]
DVD burning software: [Nero 5.5.8.0] (also indicate imaging program if applicable, for instance imgtool 0.98)
Compatibility: [SMC DVD-330: works
Sony xyz-512: works only when burning at 1x speed
Thomson 4400: skips ahead a couple of times and the picture breaks up partially in the last 30 minutes
etc.]
Additional notes: [a 10 disc pack contains at least one faulty disc].
Faulty = data can't be burned or the disc is corrupt after burning.
If you have another remark to be made please edit your own post rather than posting a reply.. or this thread will become very confusing. ADVDInfo can be downloaded at http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/dvd_utils_4.shtml, then start, select your DVD burner, put a disc into the drive, select the option 0E (Pre-Recorded Information Lead-In) and press the Read DVD Struct button. You'll get a lot of unusable info and an upper case string on the right side of the 2nd line.. that's what you're looking for. If you get an ASPI error install foreaspi 2.60 that you can get from www.doom9.org/software.htm

Retailer: [www.meritline.com]

Compatibility:
Panasonic RP-56: Good
Apex 600A: Required upgraded drive firmware, no problems
Apex 703: Good
Additional notes:
Out of 25 blanks in a pack, approximately 5 blanks had problems with skipping when played in any of the players above. Upon close examination, it appears some of the media was flawed by tiny "speckles" near the outside of the disk - this was the only part of the disk that experienced playback problems. The speckles were not on all blanks, and the ones that were not speckled played perfectly. The burns on the speckled disks play fine on PC DVD-ROM drives, possibly because of better optics and build quality?

Additional notes:
Many/most disks out of a set contain little "speckles" around disk. Some of these disks exhibit brief freezes on the Apex player at a repeatable point on the disk (varies from disk to disk). These disks read fine in a Pioneer DVD-ROM at the same points. I would recommend avoiding the media for this reason.

Very stubborn US Ver2 PS2: works perfect (most media doesn't)
Any disc that works in this PS2 works on most other standalones.
Additional notes: $187 w/free shipping for a 100 pack w/100 DVD cases. Exact part number is ML-DVDSILVER-025 (for the 25 packs). No visible imperfections, burned 5 out of my 100 pack, so far no problems to report. I highly recommend this media. These are the same discs that byrdmaniac called a 'best buy', in case anyone was wondering.
*EDIT* ===> Update
After the first 10 burns or so, the media stopped playiing on my PS2. Some will play now, most will not, or at least most have problems with skipping and pixelation at the end of the disc. I can't explain why this happens, maybe if I stare really hard at the screen while they're burning, they'll all play. But it seems that this paticular media is no longer being sold, so it's a moot point anyway. I'm buying Verbatim exclusivley now, I've had enough pain caused by generic media.

Good idea to stick this data into a database and allow people to add formatted to it. Sometimes media can be hit and miss, especially when burning discs for specific stand alone DVD players.
I have a Sony DVP-NS300 (not great by any means) but it will play DVD-Rs. I'm torn between the TDKs or Verbatims. When recording video media use GOOD QUALITY DVD-Rs - even if they cost a bit more. Sometimes a burn can be apparently successful only for some weeks or months to pass when you find your video produces signs of corruption.

Out of 6 devices that I have at my house that can read DVDs, only 2 were able to read discs burned on this media. My Lite On DVD drive, and the A03 itself. A verbatim DVD-R burned immedatley after these discs using the same software/same movie plays perfectly on all 6 devices. Don't buy this stuff. Sure, they burn at 2x...great! I'm returning mine tomorrow.

I tried to order the ML-DVDSILVER-025 recommended by bluespot and byrdmaniac from supermediastore. Instead, they sent me the white-topped Princo. When I wrote them to complain, they said that the silver top was the old version, and the white top was the new version, to be shipped out from now on, and they're updating their web site. Maybe horse sh*t, maybe not -- I don't know. They're cheap enough that I can keep them for backup use etc., and they do work on my Apex.
Be careful when trying to get the DVDPro Silver Top. Be careful when dealing with supermediastore.

Nice media, packaged in 2x25 spindle. No problem so far.
Folks could you from now on use ADVDINFO.EXE so we can tell which manufacturer is actually making the DVD ? That would be very helpfull because this way we could tell that 2 different brand in 2 different stores are actually the same.
A good example is Meritline General V2.0 Gold $1.79 = supermediaStore Ritek Gold $1.29 !!! Both are "RITEKG..03" ...
