Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows how to get the best out of xvid.

Lots of people say XVID looks better than DIVX5 - but im not seeing that.

I used a XVID VBR 2 pass for the Big Lebowski @720 meg file (reasonable byterate)& im seeing lots of macroblocks...

Oh XVID vers 4/4/02! Set with defaults & 2 pass 2nd pass internal.

Havent tinkered with alt curve and dont know where or how post processing filters are used?

Most probably you aren't using any post processing filter.
Did you download your version from Koepi's or Nic's site?
Because both of their versions have post processing filter enabled by default. BUT you have to go to File, Properties, then choose Advanced, then choose xvid, and activate the deblocking (at least this) options.

I was using umaniacs codec but have just downloaded nics 5/4/02 - will try this instead.

I dont understand this ^^ - where do i go to do this?

I have looked thru all codec options and cannot find this ^^

You find it in Mplayer2(mediaplayer 6.4)
Start the movie and press stop and follow the above.

Or until the post processing has been improved use the AviC (FourCC changer) & turn the video from XVID into DIVX & use the Divx post processing.

i turned the post processing stuff on.. and apart from that it gets horribly out of sync (athlon 800) i cant notice the slightest difference.. espacilly dark szenes look like being encoded in 256 colors sometimes...

writing my last post, i had an idea.. and switched my desktop to 32bit mode (16bit before) and it is MUCH better...

still strange, that divx3 movies look brilliant in 16 and 32 bit ...

Hrm perhaps the RGB 565/555 colour conversion isn't as good as it could be.. there isn't all that much drive to fix colorspace stuff though, it's ugly work :)

At least under windows I'm not sure Xvid really has to do clever RGB (output) conversions on a lot of graphics cards. And it certainly is slower. But like I've been asking about on the Xvid forum it would be nice to be able to store and pass along the names of some different color schemes somehow.

But I don't know which optimized conversions are built right into dshow or directx. Somehow I had gotten the impression that a lot of hardware overlays can accept data in multiple formats without a software conversion. But I could easily be very wrong about this one.
