Hi, i've been looking over the new DVD burner from HP, they claim it can write DVDs that will work in any DVD player, does this mean that DVDs can now be copied?

If so, anyone have any expeiances with this drive?

Thanks all

uhoh.. newbie alert

try reading up a little first... first of all about various DVD formats, and sizes. 1:1 copies are not possible due to CSS that's on the original disc. Furthermore most DVDs are DVD-9 which can contain 8.5gb but DVD blanks can only contain 4.7GB (and there will be no DVD-9 burners in the forseeable future). Then there's 2 competing formats... DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W... that's just something to get you started.

Hey, cheers for the head up doom9 :)

suppose you could say newbie alert, ah well, we all gotto start somewhere :)

So 8.4 discs, are these double sided, or the ones with 2 'layers' on one side??

DVD-9 is two layers on one side.. kinda glued together. DVD-10 would be 4.7GB times two (double sided) and DVD-9 would be like a double sided DVD-9 so it has 2x8.5gb capacity.
and here's a link to the official dvd faq: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/officialfaq.html

check it out.. it's a long read but definitely worth it.
