Dear All

First a "hope to see you soon" message for the dvd2svcd forum gurus who are (i hope) taking a brake...

Something strange happened to me while trying to dupe FinalFantasy portuguese edittion.

The subtitles failed. The Submux just complain thet the bmp were empty. In fact they are all black.

This situation continued even after i changed the pallete values.

I'm sure that dvd2svcd is ripping the subtitles, because the bmp's have diferent shapes/sizes, it is just that they are all black.

As usual i decided to rip the english subtitle and the portuguese subtitle. This edition of the dvd has many spanish/english subs which represent the directors comment.

I noted that the 0x20 and the 0x22 (english and portuguese) where blank in the subtitles configuration screen.(the others are not but i can recognize the director comments).

After pressing "next" two times i get a typical delphi error (access violation on xxxx)

Wen I do not press next 2 times the ripping goes on and the bmp's are blank.

Here is what i think is happening (please correct me if not)

Final fantasy begins with the girl dream and no talking, but the director comment starts explaining the dream.

Could it be possible that dvd2svcd only scans the first few frames/seconds for the subtitles and by this it does not find the English/protuguese that i want.

Wen leaving the 0x20 and the 0x22 selected i can not costumize the pallette, does dvd2svcd ignore the pallette (even if i force the values of the pallette before starting the rip)? But still executes the rip?

Is there a work around for this

Please share your thoughts

Best Regards

Barbas

Thanks a lot

I was trying to find out if this is a bug

You could at least read the hole message

I did read the whole message, thats why i moved it. You can go on dvd2svcd website and find that there is a read me file and it states that a subtitle bug has been found and fixed for the next release.

Well I went trough the readme again and still can't find it, I see some bugs relative to the subtitles but nothing related to this)

Never mind....

Sorry for my awnser but sometimes you moderators just have no patiente for us common mortals.

I did some further test and i think i can prove my theory or at least have some more information

I proceded to rip the dvd using smart ripper and excluded all streams that did not interested me, i.e. i only ripped the original sound, the 0x20 english, the 0x22 portuguese and the others (on a past life i discovered that this other stream is actually related to the chapters, either that or i'm really superticious now)

After the ripp was completed i started dvd2svcd

Guess what The subtitles are ok (the bmp files)

Cheers

Well since i dont do subtitles i can't help you there, but if you read the sticky called forum structure "What goes where" and if you really understand the meaning of that sticky, you'll see i moved your thread not because of patients, but because it belongs in here.

Just to mention that I also get this bug, it crashes out of the subtitle selection, it was on Ghostbusters region 2 and went away after deselecting some of the subtitle languages. I was using internal routines to rip the DVD.

This is only to confirm that I have encountered the above mentioned also and is does exist. However, it happened only twice over 97 encodes so far, on PAL DVDs: Z,made in France and an obscure one that I do not recall, made in Greece.
So, I do not think that it is a problem of internal routines, but rather a problem with the DVD itself.(bad encoding, bad pressing or scratches)
Problem solved exactly as Barbas describes with Smartripper Stream Process. But as this method solves various rare problems (some bad pressings, bad -but unwanted- audio or subtitle streams that crash internal routines) and is already mentioned as the "Last Resort" for DVD ripping, I didn't think I'd post it.

I don't believe it is related with DVD problems like Arianos said (bad DVD pressing or bad audio/subtitle streams). I might be wrong but it is almost certainly related with subtitles language mixing at the start of the movie. It coul be just a coincidence, but I'm having similar problems as Barbas had with Final Fantasy; in my case it's U-571 - I just love war movies, especially with submarines ;) - it starts with germans speaking, so english subtitles are needed, right at the start of the movie. I think this confuses DVD2SVCD and it can't find the proper subtitle stream. But then again, I might be wrong...

Best compliments to you all and...
...god help the portuguese team in the football worldcup! We're gonna win, yes we are :D

If, in the subtitle preview window, there is any subtitles not being shown, press the next button until you do see all the subtitles you want, otherwise it will be black subs.

Are u using the last release of DVD2SVCD?
Because i had the same problem in older release but in the 1.0.9 build 2 i have no more problem.
For older release yes, you have to press next until u see the subtitles u need.
For the access violation error i usually act like this:
Open and configure DVD2SVCD (audio, subtitles, bitrate etc. etc.)
Then close DVD2SVCD and reopen.
This time, very very important, u don't have to go in any other tab except in the conversion tab where u select the ifo of the movie and start the conversion.
This time in the subtitles selection screen u can press the next button without any problem.
For me worked pretty well, hope that work for u too.
bye.
