Has anyone tried using Divx 5 with Xmpeg? When I use it, I get weird purple smears across the bottom of the video.

ummm, we're gonna need a bit more than that :)

what resolution is your output? what resizing method are you using? what settings do you have enabled in Divx5?

I just used the default settings in Divx 5 basic.

I am encoding at 720x480 (like I always do with DivX4) and with all the same settings used in the guide for DivX4 and Xmpeg.

2-pass encoding.
Bressenham filtering.
YV12 format
16/9 aspect ratio (keep aspect ratio) - DVD is 16:9
1:1 (VGA) pixel aspect

I have also cropped the image.

I've tried this with two different DVDs so far, and I get the purple (magenta, really) smearing effect at the bottom of the video. This smearing seems to mainly happen when there is motion in the video.

I don't have the problem when using Gknot (however, I'd rather use Xmpeg, as it seems much easier).

ok, if you're using the basic version, that means no GMC, Qpel or B-frames. Are preprocessing or psychovisual enhancements enabled? If so, turn them off. Make sure the iDCT option you choose conforms with the spec. For a resize filter, try Nearest Neighbor You said you cropped the image, and that you're encoding at 720x480. Is that resolution the size before cropping? If so, what's the size after cropping?

And to any out there who may be asking why I suggested some of the things I did, I'm just trying to start from as bland a config as possible. Call it a holdover from my days doing dialup Internet Tech Support :)

you have not said what version of xmpeg??

v4.2b works for me
v4.31 hopeless
v4.5 sort of works but wrong aspect ratio on o/p

also check that u use a resolution that (after cropping) is ivideable by 16 (8 works most of the times, but 4 mosttimes produces crappy output at least for me)

I'm using Xmpeg 4.5 (I've also tried 4.2c). I've cropped the image to 704x304. I'm not using preprocessing or psychovisual enhancements.

Have any of you tried Xmpeg with DivX 5 and had it work fine?

I've converted 13 letterboxed episodes of Smallville from SVCD to Divx5 in Xmpeg 4.5, no problems here :)

works fine for me too,...
(encoded some DVDs and a buch of mpegs to with DivX5&Xmpeg)

check if the vobs (on hdd)are (without problems&co) playable with e.g. Powerdvd, maybe something went wrong while ripping

Ps.: Also check that all the features in the Codecs General Parameters sektion are disabled and frame type stands on (all frames are progressive)

AND check out if DivX5.0.1 fixes the problem :D

Problem solved!

It WAS the dimensions! Apparently, I hadn't been cropping with dimensions that were multiples of 16. Everything works fine when I make sure they are.

Thanks, everybody, for your help.

Yes,

the exact same thing happened to me when I was encoding a video with Divx 5.0

Specs:

Xmpeg 4.5
Resolution BEFORE cropping: 352 X 240
After cropping: don't know, used auto crop, then made the figures divisible by 4.

No wierd effects.

Bicubic filter,
standard everything else
original aspect ratio
progressive structure

But I just went back to the old Divx 4.12 and everything seems to be fine (with Xmpeg 4.5 again)

I get the purple smears across the bottom as well.

All is ok!!

check out www.DivX.com (http://www.divx.com)
for the scoop. Go to the revision history and you will see that the problem is fixed!

yeah, but a resolution that's not div 16 will still take longer to encode and might not look as good. (The DivXNetworks folks mentioned that somewhere on their page.)
