Windows 2000, WinDVD, & S/PDIF

All the software manufacturers say it can't be done, but I refuse to believe I can't select the S/PDIF passthrough in WinDVD from Windows 2000 or XP for surround decoding with an external processor/preamp. Win98se worked like a champ, but I don't think I can resist upgrading anymore.

I'm using a professional grade soundcard, the M-Audio Delta 1010, that has a S/PDIF output and I've manually registered the mpgaudio.ax file with no luck.

A search of these boards didn't bring up much. If anyone can help, I'd sincerely appreciate it.

No takers? Ok. So I'll throw in a few more points. I can download and play a DTS encoded recording (http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/Download_DTS_Recording.htm) by just selecting the S/PDIF output from the Sounds and Multimedia options in the Control Panel and switching my receiver to DTS. No problem.

So why can Windows Media Player seemingly output a DTS signal to the S/PDIF output just fine but WinDVD nor any other soft DVD player can't? InterVideo swears it can't be done.

I just don't get it.

What do you mean they swear ti can;t be done...On that soundcard? or with any soundcard??

I have a sblive 5.1 x-gamer, i upgraded my drivers to xp (pro) and i output straight dolby digital to my external amp just fine....

Intervideo needs to identify and support your soundcard though or you're sunk.

ussualy what you have to do is set the card to use spdif out in it's control panal, and set whatever the software decoder is to spdif and it should work,..

have you tried powerdvd 4 xp?

Intervideo says this in their FAQ:

"What do I need to know about SP/DIF and Windows 2000?

SP/DIF support is available with the WinDVD software and supported audio chipsets. However, native support for this feature is not yet available in the Windows 2000 operating system. Microsoft may address this issue in the future with a service pack release. We do not support SP/DIF under Windows 2000 SP2."

Even though Intervideo spelled S/PDIF wrong, Cyberlink says:

"Please check your OS (Operating System). Basically if your OS is
Win2000 & NT then S/PDIF & Multi-channel function are not available."

Based on that statement, I expect the same results with PowerDVD. I understand that SB Live! users have had luck with this function in Windows 2000, but those of us who paid $700 for their sound cards are out of luck.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work for me and based on what I found at the soft DVD's websites, I figured it wasn't a config issue on my part.

I have this installed in a professional surround mixing room. I'm just getting tired of burning off all my surround mixes to CD-R to play them in a hardware based DVD player for clients.

what sound card do you have, what version on windvd?

And the million dollar stupid question...why dont you change oeprating systems?

not that you should be forced to by software company and ahrdware peopel butting heads and being stubborn.......but such is our industry.
