A friend of mine gave me some divx film registered from satellite. The quality is quite good.
Now the question(s):
1) Which DVB card do you suggest
2) Does anyone know a good site explaining how copy an mpeg2 on the hard disk to reconvert to divx?
3) What about encrypted channel? Is possible to view them?

Before buying I have to be sure this metod works well.

Hi .. i do have a Pinnacle PCTVSat .. its quite reasonable priced ( about 100 - 150 € ) and is meanwhile working ok .. but the software being initially released with the card by Pinnacle was a mere catastrophee .. and if i tell you that now, about 18 months after this card came to market, the soft is still beta 3 you may know what i mean .. support by Pinnacle is a nightmare !!!

I have to check the support board now, maybe they released the final meanwhile, but i am tired to check as you may understand.

The card offers

-time shift
-record as MPEG2 to HDD ( promised with final, beta3 can do easy conversion after recording is done )
-different aspect resolutions
-switchable language streams
etc.

and needs hell of CPU power !! ( no MPEG2 decoder as chip )

You cant use the common decoder chip cards as the big Haupauge card can do, but i am not interested at all in pay-TV, so i dont care at all ...

The MPEG2 streams are sometimes 480 * 576 resolution ( depending on TV station, they can be cut and burnt directly as S-VCDs ... normal res is 720 * 576 ( Astra Digital ).
Encoding them is quite similar to encoding DVDs ( DVD2AVI, GKNot ), but you have to extract the audio for good handling, TMPEG is doing this perfectly, good old FlaskMPEG is very comfortable to use, i will give Vidomi and DVD-X a shot soon if i dont need ultimate quality ...

Sorry, not possible for this card IMHO, and Doom9 wont be happy if you talk about such subjects here i guess ... but you may ask at your language Pinnacle support board ( http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/default.asp?lng=2 ) , but its likely you get banned ;) .... try here if you speak German ( or maybe try in English, they may reply also ) : http://www.wesellall.de/apboard/main.php3 .... Tom and his friends are really cool, so its likely you get a detailled reply ... BTW i dont think Pinnacle does love this board too much :D .....

If you're talking about DVB I assume you live in Europe and then I suggest you stay away from Pinnacle's products since they don't support encrypted channels at all. You should buy a DVB-s card based on Technotrend's card i.e. Hauppauge, Skystar, Galaxis or Siemens.
With the latest software these cards support saving to MPEG2 directly but the reulting stream is a bit flawed. I always save in the native PVA-format and convert afterwards. The resulting MPEG2-stream is just like any DVD-encode so almost all the guides and tools on this site applies.
Multidec is discussed at http://tforums.com/happysat

I've discovered that the card that can do what I'd like to do is a bit too expensive (300€) for my possibilities :(, so by now I cannot buy it. Thanks anyway :)

@movmasty: Did you know..
that your knowledge of the english language impresses me every time I read your postings ? Like your knowledge in VCD2DivX encoding (12 FPS for VCD2DivX conversion) !

salaries are much more high in Germany
What does this mean ? Salaries in Germany are higher ? Higher than what ? Higher than the average income of peoples where ?

Make a point here or stop posting such crap.
