Streams

Hi,
i know this is going to sound like a really lame question but I had to ask:

'What *exactly* is a stream?'
I mean, we speak of audio streams and video streams. How would you define a stream?
Please be kind enough to clear this for me.

Vob files contain many things: video, sometimes with multiple angles; audio with different numbers of channels, such as surround sound, stereo, different languages, director's commentary; subtitles, often in different languages.
