Converting HI8 to DVD-R

I'm trying to make head or tails with no avail.

What I'm trying to do is convert my Digital camera tapes to DVD-R.

I have a Sony DCR-TVR310, Firewire card, PIII 933 running WIN XP and a large hard drive (60Meg NTSF)and Pioneer A03.

What is the prefered software to capture to hard drive and what format. What authoring software will give the clearest and best picture when played back from a stand alone DVD player.

Sorry if these questions were asked before but I can't seem to find it.

Hi Skutny,


First thing your should do is find out if your camcorder is a hi8 or dv / d8 model sorry i do not know. If it is Hi8 you need to get hold of a analog to digital capture card the cheapest being probably a tv card. You would be best plugging the s-video out from the cam to the s-video of the card then running the avi_io program to capture avi using the huffyuv codec then cropping and resizing to 720 x 576 (for pal) with virtualdub then using cinemacraft encoder to make an mpeg2 compliant file you could use in a program like Dvd Maestro to make a dvd iso you could burn in in your Pioneet A03 using Primo Dvd.

If you have a dv / d8 cam use a program called ScenalyzerLive to 'capture' the digital stream with you firewire / ieee1394 / ilink card and lead connected to your cam. From there you follow basically the same path you load the file into virtualdub and prepare it for encoding you may have to install the mainconcept or canopus dv codec to open the captured file successfully in virtualdub.

Thanks John,

I've down loaded Scenarist demo and I'm previewing it before purchase.

I've capture a short movie and it created the AVI. Now I'm searching for Cinemacraft for the encoding.

I'll tru the Spruceup demo to see the out come.

When I try to encode the avi that was created by scenalyzer I get an error message in Cinmacraft "Could not find appropriate video codec for DVSD.

I searched the web and found out that DVSD is the codec used by Sony DV, I wonder if this is in reference to my Sony DV Camera.

Found out that I need qvd.dll, but when looked in \system 32\ it was already there, and windows media player is able to play the AVI.

What I'm I doing wrong any Ideas?
Is there a setting that I may have missed in Scenalyzer?

Sorry I do not have much experience with dv or cce I have yet to install my firewire card and upgrade my pooter to run cce one of these days I will.

As far as I know the dv avi should be able to be opened with any "directshow filter"? or the actual codec itself maybe that's all I know accept I heard there was type 1 and 2 dv avi codecs or 'wrappers' whatever they are one of them is harder to work with than the other also I hear cce can be finicky about it's input i.e. filesevering work to one version then not the newer one.


Try installing the panasonic codec I heard someone talk about it here

maybe you have to uninstall the Sony one so it works for playback.

If all else fails you could export the file after editing with the huffyuv lossless codec then put into cce unfortunately this will make a very big file even compared to dv.
