XMPEG won't start encoding

I'm sure I've had this problem before, but I can't remember how I fixed it. When I click to start the encoding XMPEG tells me that "an error occured when trying to generate the file".

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

deinstall all your mp3 codecs from the system (multimedia=>HArdware=>audiocodecs something like this)
reboot
install just one mp3 Codec e.g. Lame ACM or Radium mp3
