How to edit .mp2 video files? (ATI AiW)

With my ATI All in Wonder Radeon I sometimes capture clips using the time-shift function. This means I export the time-shift file to a folder.
Usually I do this when I've just seen an interesting news clip that I would like to archive.

What I have on my harddrive then is a huge .mp2 file that contains MPEG-1 video (very high bitrate, I think 6000) and Layer 2 audio.

I usually want only a very small part of this clip, so I would like to have some recommendations on which software to use to

1. Split off a small file
2. Convert somehow to VDub-usable file format (audio and video)

I tried TMPGenc (MPEG tools menu) for the splitting, but the audio was out of synch in the resulting file, so right now I encode THE WHOLE THING to xvid/divx and split then. This takes quite some time :scared: and involves exporting a huge .wav file from TMPGenc.

any thoughts?

You can also use ifilmedit by cinax and myflix / m1editpro / m2editpro to cut and join mpeg files m2editpro is quite comprehensive even allowing with some quality limitations of courseto edit frame accurate.

I just frameserve from DVD2AVI to virtualdub. I love vdub!

Thanks John! The pricetag on these is quite impressive, though ;) I'll try downloading the trial versions.

Brian, DVD2AVI doesn't want these files. I guess it's because of the mpeg1- video.

But even if it did... VDub can't process the audio, so I can't do any cutting/range encoding. Instead I have to encode the whole thing and cut after muxing audio and video back together.

I thougth that VDub can open mpeg1 files directly. MP2 extension refers to mpeg2.
At least in my radeon VIVO. If i capture mpeg1, the extension is mpg.

If your video is mpeg2 maybe you need to rename the extension to m2p or vob
to make it work in DVD2AVI.
I think that worked for me when i wanted to do similar things. I had to change the framerate in VDub to keep sound in synch though.
DVD2AVI has an option to save sound in mp3-format, but i have no experience how
well it works.

Nowday if I want to capture with minimal hard drive usage i use XVID
because i never got ATIs mpeg-capture to work right. Of course time
shifting isn't available for avi, or is it.

If its mpeg-1, rename it with a .mpg extension and open with virtualdub directly.

If its mpeg-2:
1.Open the mpeg-2 with DVD2AVI
2.Save the audio as a wave file to you hard drive
3.Open the DVD2AVI project in virtualdub (frameserving)
4.ALT-A -> W -> find the wav file you just saved w/DVD2AVI
5.Splice to your hearts content!

oh, and you of course you can select the area you want to archive
in the DVD2AVI already.
This only works on mpeg2 files of course but like Brian said mpeg1 files
should open directly in VDub.
Save the project in DVD2AVI and frameserve video into VirtualDub.
Add wav audio and compress into preferred format.
This way your wav-file will be smaller, because you don't have decode original
soundtrack completely.

With my Ati Card all .mp2 are mpeg 2's. and Saved .mpg files are mpeg 1. What I do is rename the .mp2 to .mpg. and with the high encode rate like you are doing. I use tmpge with its mpeg 2 merge/cut I cut the clips I want out as mpeg 2's. Then you can take that mpeg 2 and do about anything you want with it. Frameserve it DVDAVI and make an AVI out of it. Or I rename it to vts_01_1.vob and make SVCD's out it with DVD2SVCD for my DVD stand alone player. It works great.
