from www.dealnews.com:
FireWireDirect.com offers 4.7GB DVD-R media 100-packs for $199 each, as a reader found. At just under $2 per disc, it's among the lowest price we've seen for DVD-R media. Offer ends April 9, 2002

I’m not trying to be critical, but… If you burn $199 worth of coasters due to cheap quality media, then what kind of “great deal” is that? And I’m not overly suspicions, but… why does this post read like an advertisement?
As someone who owns a burner and has been plagued in the past by cheap quality media, that created frustrations and coasters. The old adage, “you get what you pay for” at this early stage of DVD-R media production is worth paying attention to. The Apple Internet store sells (what are essentially relabeled Pioneer) DVD-R’s for $5.38, that’s tax and shipping included.
My intention is not to slam, just to pass on my limited experience.

I see what you're saying. I can't speak for their quality. But dealnews is independant, if you visit the site, you'll see they take reader submissions for deals on anything online.

I've delt with this exact media before on my panasonic 311 in a 10-pack and every single one worked great. No problems what so ever. The TDK and Pioneer brand dvdr's are real sctrach sensitive but I accedentally rubbed one of these against course carpet and scratched the hell out of it and it still read in a cheap ass tosheba dvd player. It's the shit ass pioneer burners that are REALLY REALLY sensitive to the media. The Sony's, Phillips, and Panasonics do give what brand you put in. They will burn anything.
Don't know about you but this is an awsome DEAL!!
** Another thing. The APPLe dvdr's don't reccomend putting lables on there media and I did for lord of the rings, the movie became blocky at parts. This brand, No Problem.

I just ordered a Encloser, firewire card and cable for my new DVD-R from firewiredirect.com right before i read this thread, if anyone else gets NO-COASTER reports from these DVD-Rs i will seriously consider buying some. I want to hear about someone that wrote a FULL disk and put it in a cheap DVD player that has known end-of-disc problems.

I guess these discs won't work in an HP100i DVD burner (DVD+RW)will they?:(

They work fine! Tested with JP3, Fight club, and Lord of the rings. All work fine!

viper3344,
That's good to know. I didn't know the HP unit would even write DVD-R. I though it worked only with DVD+RW??? They really ought to advertise that better!

Interesting -- that site again espouses HP support for DVD+R but again doesn't mention support for DVD-R. DVD+R costs too much. DVD-R is too cheap to give up (I get mine for $1.89 at CD-Recordable.com). I'd love to get a DVD+RW drive that supports DVD-R(+RW is expensive also, but I really don't worry about the cost of multiple-write media since I'd never put anything permanent on it).

Here's the reply from Firewire direct regarding the HP100i--
"Those are 1x media and although we haven't run tests on that specific drive
here in the shop, we have it as listed as compatible"
Hey Viper3344, did you burn at 2x with the HP100i or 1x?

You can get blank dvd's for $1.59 a piece from there if you buy a hundred. Ive burned many (50+) ... not one coaster. Youd have to be an idiot to pay 6 bucks for something you can pay less than 2 bucks for.
