After the first pass in gordian knot, I get the 2 avs files, one for the movie and one for the credits. Since gordian knot loves to freeze on me, is there a way to use these avs files to finish my encoding so I don't have to start all over again. Thanks

You can re-use the avs files manually by opening them Vdub or nandub ... but... you can also resubmit batch jobs from within GKnot. Click the Encoder tab, then click "Add Job." Select your avs files where it says "Frameserver" or "Frameserver credits."

thanks, I tried that and the movie came out choppy. In the upper left corner, what do I put, Two pass, first pass or second pass?

I know these may be stupid questions but I am new so please take it easy on me. What exactly is an avs file? What happens after the first pass? The second pass? My computer loves to freeze. What is the best way to resume if it freezes during the second pass? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

check the gknot and divx 5 guides: there is explained the manual use of avs files (because divx 5 doesn't work with the automatic encoding features).
You need to do a first pass, then a second pass - you can put these two jobs in a batch-job (see the guide).

An avs-file is a pseudo-avi file that frameserves to an application that can work with avi files (mpeg2 --> avisynth-script.avs --> vdub).
You can open the .avs file with a text editor to see what it does (it calls some filters and stuff, you can also change these manually, if you like to).

btw. take care of your system first. Check your hardware (board, memory, memory timings, temperatures, voltages).
A system that loves to hang is kinda useless...

@theReal: I think yoshi is using DivX3 or DivX4 ... based on his questions.

yoshi, you'll get the best automation if you select "2-pass" ... and don't forget to go to the "Audio 1" tab and reselect your sound file, as you did for your first GKnot run. The other options (1st pass, etc.) are less automated, and you'd have to run your own sound/video interleaving step, at the very least.

Make sure, also, you're in the right video encoding tab -- DivX4 or DivX3.

@jggimi I also think he was using divx4, but in the divx5 guide it is explained how to use the .avs file manually and set up a batch job in vdub and so on. That's exactly what he wanted to do, only with divx 4 - so I thought the divx5 guide would be closest to his needs (except for the slightly different codec).

Perhaps, but as a newb, I wanted to provide the simplest answer. Editing AVS wasn't on his list of requirements.

Yoshi... between theReal and me .... have we been able to help you?

Thanks for the help. Any help is good help. I just started doing this. My computer likes to hang with gknot, and gnot only. Not sure why. I think a reformatting is in my near future.

Anyway, here's another question. Does the first pass make the avs files? If not, what does it do? I ask this for one reason. When my system hangs during the second pass, can I just do the second pass using the created avs files? Or do I need to load the avs and do both passes? What does each pass do? I am just trying to shorten the encoding time when my system hangs since I hate having to started over. Thanks for your help.

Wow. I'd just answered this very question in another forum yesterday. The discussion was on DivX5, so you can ignore the issue of the "MV" file, it's not applicable to DivX4/3, and nobody seems to know what it is anyway. ;)

Here's the link: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22401.

Yes, you CAN restart from the second pass; but you'll have to do one or two manual steps that are automatic if you let GKnot do both passes: Concatenating a low-quality end-credits section, if you do that, and interleaving and syncing audio with video. Doom9 has guides for both of these steps (and they can be done in the same Nandub session).

Good luck!

I understand how to join the credits to the movie and how to sync the audio with the video. However, how do I restart the second pass say if my computer freezes after the first pass? Thanks

Open Gordian Knot application
Select Encoder tab
Click "Add job" button
Select appropriate DivX codec tab (3 or 4)
Select "Second Pass"
Select Frameserver (avs) file by clicking Select button
Click "Add job to encoding queue" button
Click on Yes when prompted to start immediately.

That's what I thought and just wanted to be sure. Thank you very much.
