Hi all,
Can someone please explain to me (or link me) what do the log files generated when doing a 2 pass in divx 5 pro actually do?
I notice 2 in the "2 pass encoding log files" section under the DivX codec tab.
+ another under the Advanced Parameters tab???
Can using a MV file generated in the first pass speed up the 2nd pass?
Also how do i do a 2 pass 2nd pass encode with the divx 5 pro codec?
I'd be greatful for any enlightenment cos I need lots.

I'll try. This may not be completely accurate, as it's my interpretation.
First, understand the purpose of a 2-pass encoding. It's to get the highest possible overall quality in a specific file size. During the first pass, the codec is used to analyze the video, frame by frame. That way, scenes that need more bits -- less compression -- will get them, and scenes that don't need as many bits get higher compression.
The log file is that frame by frame analysis, used by the second pass to do the actual encoding.
Here's what I got from the DivX codec help page:During the first pass of "2-pass", encoding data is gathered that will be reused at the second pass to increase accuracy and quality. To reduce encoding time when choosing "2-pass" the encoding data can be reused when there is a need to encode the same content in "2-pass" mode with the same settings. Encoding time is reduced since this will only require that the 2nd pass be performed. It is possible that external applications be developed to manipulate these logs for even more accurate adjustments in data allocation. The MV log file is an additional analysis, I assume for motion. MV is an MPEG4 attribute, and while I don't know what it is, I use it.:stupid:

I understand more now!
But Why does divx 5 pro use 2 log files and a MV file?
Also can some1 explain what an MV file is?

There is no 2nd log file Divx5PRO. In Advanced parameters tab is option to create log file when you convert avi to MPG4 and nothing else.
jiggimi explained 1pass log and MV (motion vector) is used for scene changing and motion , but some NunDub user could explain that better than me.
In Divx4 there was also MV in 1st pass but it wasn't written anywhere so codec had to do MV again in 2nd pass. Thats why Divx5 is faster in second pass then divx4.
