ReMpeg – 36 Hours, Is That Normal?

I have used Rempeg to encode/decode many movies. I like the quality, but hate the time it takes to finish. Has anyone found a way to speed up the process?

I set the options for maximum quality (i.e. match source, reference DCT, search technique = Gradient) because for me quality beats speed, but some projects take 14 to 36 hours. Is that normal?

If I use my computer (i.e. surf the web or run a program) it takes longer. Is that normal?

The lower the scale factor (i.e. 75% and lower) the long it takes. Is that normal?

I would appreciate hearing from those how use ReMpeg, so I can determine if what I’m experiencing is normal/typical. THANKS

well.. one of your problems is reference dct.. there's a reason why the guide suggests to use integer dct.. reference is slow as hell and doesn't look better (or at least not visibly better.. the difference is purely mathematical).. and even with that.. it takes a long time to transcode, especially if you don't have the latest cpu. I don't really recall but I think it was somewhere between 8-12h for a 2h movie on my athlon xp 1800 which isn't exactly the slowest of chips available.. most people have slower cpus.

I have a p4 2.0 and i use reference dct and it takes about 6 hours for a 2 hour movie

6-8 hours sounds real for me 36h is too long for transcoding.

I use REMPEG with integer DCT, Frame mode in Match Source, and the output resolution in 720 x 480, and the quality is excellent. Movies take about 5-7 hours in my Pentium 4 with the 845D Intel Motherboard with 512 of memory.

I've got a Pentium PIII 650MHz and it takes 24 Hours+.

That's why I love the Ifoedit 'Split to 2 x DVD-R's' option.

I have a P4 1.7 and it usually takes 8-10 hours to ReMPEG. Thats with integer though, I have never tried it at reference.

I'm with you on this one. I have a P3 600mhz I have just finished encoding "Gosford Park" (movie run time 2hrs 10mins)it took 33hrs (my longest yet) I've only done a couple of others, (with ReMPEG2) but were're talking 20+hrs. (ish)

I do use Interger DCT & Match mode as well. I try not to go below 80% scalefactor.

With one exception (The Untouchables, some pixelation) I have found the quality very good.

I think this will be my personal limit to encoding. I have split a DVD in half (The Longest Day) pun not intended. I have to say, it was about as easy as it gets. (Smartripper / IfoEdit)

In future, I'll look long and hard at the size of the movie before I choose ReMPEG2, but only because of the time, nothing else.
